Click start. Type in disc cleanup. Then select which HDD you need to free memory on (ie local disc)
Once scanned tick each individual box (scroll down also) and click ok then delete. This will free up some memory on your selected HDD. Using disc cleanup removes unnecessary data and files stored onto your HDD via the internet.
Once you have preformed a disc clean up. Click start and then type disk defrag. Click the HDD you want (ie local disc) and then click defragment. This may take some time but is worth doing as it basically squashes all the data on your HDD as when you delete data from your computer it leaves gaps in your memory.

Hope this helps and please rate, thanks

Harddisk maintenance should be carried once a month. Thisremoves redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up harddisk access. Disk Cleanup should be donefirst - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then clickProperties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it willcalculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes torecover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to performthese actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs tobe Defrag. This process converts fragmented filesinto continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disknot work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - SystemTools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the Cdrive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. When this is completedrepeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially ifthese tasks have not been for a long time.

I would download and run the registry utility from iobit.com
It is freeware and works then run CHKDSK/F.

Within iobits programme are useful utilities that empty the temporary directories and can remove unwanted old files.
Hope that helps.

Yes take a look at your drive manager in windows.
(Right click) Computer - Manage - Disk Management.
This will show you how your drives are setup.

I have a Verbatim Clon 500GB external hard drive which only holds 4.65 GB; why??

Windows 7Might not be formatted correctly. Check Disc Management under Administrative tools. This will give the true size including space that has not assigned as a partition.

I have a acer aspire one and this pop-up keeps coming up saying 'out of virtual memory' - i dont know what to do. Also every hour or so my theme changes to classic (i have Windows XP) for about 5-10...

Virtual memory is the space the laptop uses on the hard drive to write to and read from. It usually is caused by running too many applications at once, thereby putting a greater demand on the free disc space you have,

Firstly, you need to check how much free disc space you have. Less than say 1 GB will flag up the issue ( depending how much virtual memory the computer is allocating). You need to remove some data from the hard drive and back it up to free some disc space

Then consider upgrading your ram to help you run more programmes at once if needed

Finally, consider getting an external usb drive to store data on, or upgrade your hard drive

Why does my laptop show low disc space?

Hello

The low disc space message refers to the amount of free disc space on your c drive. The c drive is the drive on which your windows is installed, thus yu need to delete some games or not neccesary files to free up some space on your drive. Hope this can help you.

Kind regards

Sonic MyDVD - not enough disc space

well, sonic dvd creates temporary files. I noticed it doesnt delete those files. they are somewhere in documents & Settings\(user)\
i can't seem to recall the exact place but its either under Application data or Local Settings\
you can check the disk size for these two folders and or the size for sonic folder in these two. would take few clicks and im sure you will reach there.
sorry for the partial answer as its been over 2 years when I had to find the missing disk space =)
