It is possible that the video driver cannot support 1440X900 resolution.
Try installing the latest video driver and then try the higher screen resolution.

Reboot the computer into safemode. to do this tap F8 after the logo screen for gateway goes away. select Safe Mode.

Right click the desktop and click properties. in this window click settings. change the resolution to 1024x768.

click the advanced button. click monitor tab then set the screen refresh rate to 60 hertz.

if the monitor is compatible it will be able to be displayed. else try 1440x900 and 60Hertz for the settings

I am using an HW173D monitor with Windowsd XP, and everything displays too wide. How can I resolve this problem?

You need to go to your Display Properties (in Control Panel or right-click desktop and choose Properties), go to Settings tab and set the desktop resolution to 1440x900 which is your monitor's native resolution.
If this resolution is not available, make sure your monitor type (found in Advanced options) is set to "Plug and Play monitor".

Windows XP Not displaying fully on 1440x900 resolution.

If you have one of those older CRT monitors you should be able to resize the image. Some LCDs have screen shifting tools too. Try doing a full restart, too. (shutting your computer down, waiting 1 or 2 minutes, then starting it up again.)

I recently purchased and installed the P191W monitor, and now my pictures are stretched. I was told I new to get a new graphics card. What card should I get? Or can I just update the driver? I am running...

Find your monitor's native resolution, in your case it's 1440x900. Go to display settings (usually right-click on desktop and choose properties), go to settings tab and move the resolution slider until it shows 1440x900. Confirm, the screen should flicker for a moment and adjust - and you should be fine.
If there is no 1440x900 resolution available, then installing a monitor .inf file that came on a disk accompanying the monitor might help.

Restart computer -> Keep tapping on F8 key till safe mode option appears-> login using safe mode -> when login complete -> rightclick on my computer -> properties-> hardware tab -> Device Manager -> click on Sub-option "Display Adapters"-> Right click the adapter inside -> properties -> driver tab -> rollback drivers.
Follow instructions and restart and choose normal windows if asked.

If not successful, goto start -> all programs -> Accessories -> System tools, -> system resore -> choose restore to a previous... -> choose a date before the date you updated drivers. dont go 3-4 month, you might loose data. choose a closer date to the date you found the issue. follow the instructions.

restarts automatically and recovery screen comes. dont worry this is normal. when done, restart the system and see if resolution is alright.

get back to us with what has happened, we will support you further.

thanks, have a nice day....

Try changing the resolution to 1440x900. This is the ideal resolution for this monitor.
To change the resolution:
Right click on an empty space on your Windows desktop.
Choose Properties (XP) or Personalize (Vista)
Choose the Settings tab (XP) or Display Settings (Vista).
Slide the resolution slider to 1440x900, then click apply.
If asked whether you want to keep this setting, choose yes/ok.

Note: Not all video cards support this resolution. Updating your video card's (not monitor's) driver may add it.

Your going to love this. Open control panel, open display. Click the settings tab. Click Advanced. Click the Monitor tab. Remove the check mark from "hide modes". Click the drop down menu & set it to 75 hertz. Click Apply & than ok. You are now back to the Settings window. At Screen resolution move the slide bar to more. Pick what you want.
