Question about Singer 1120 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

Cannot get bobbin case, etc. back together and in front loader. Your solution: read a manual. If you have ever had this problem, then you would know how ridiculous this is. I've studied pictures and the vague at best description of how to do it until I am blue in the face. I think I just need to return it and get a refund because customer support sadly lacking. I need to speak to a LIVE person. WB

There is another person with the same stuck needle problem on this web site right now. Putting the bobbin stuff back in has something to do with it, I am sure, because with that stuff out the needle does just fine. How can I get a replacement machine, since clearly there is something wrong with it. Do you know what I mean about the two levers? It is the left one that causes the problem.

Call Singer at 1-800-4singer and you can speak to a live person. I still think that if you look at the manual online and blow to 200% up the diagram you will see it very clear on page 33, it is free to download. They have it all broke down to see how it goes together

Evidently you did not read my comment or did not understand it. I know what to do but it will not work with both of the levers holding it in. The needle will not move.

I did not see your mention of the stuck needle. You need to take it for service because I doubt anyone can help you with what you are describing without being there to look at it. I have never in 50 years of sewing came up against this.

Sounds like you are describing the hook. Perhaps the owner's manual would be assistance. We don't know the make/model of your machine so are really unable to help. There are some videos on YouTube that show how to install a shuttle and bobbin case, but machines differ.

We can't figure out how to thread the bobbin or put the bobbin assembly together.

go to this page
type in "W312" and click 'search'.

You will see a manual for your White machine is available for download. Most Whites and Singer manuals are available from this website to download.

The manual shows you how to load the bobbin into the bobbin case, they have a hinged latch on front, you need to hold this out when you are inserting the bobbin case back into the machine's rotary hook area to secure it in place.

There is lots of good sewing machine help on too that might be of help to you.

I have inherited this machine and can't tell where

It might be top loading possibly, newer Janomes are.

Earlier ones are front loading in a bobbin case. Can you remove the accessory box at the front to get access to a front door?

Loading a sewing macheine

There are two threads you're asking about, or could possibly be asking about. The first is the top thread. There is a diagram across the top of the machine with numbers(1, 2, 3, etc) detailing where to put the thread and how.

Your bottom thread, otherwise known as your Bobbin, will have the same diagrams, depending on whether it is a top loader, or a front loader. If it is a top loader, simply remove the bobbin door, and drop in the bobbin, making sure the thread is facing the direction the diagram tells you it should be facing. For a front loader, the diagram will also ensure you know what you're doing, often with a bobbin case involved.

Threads jammed in bobbin race

Giving your make and model is always a good idea, saves time and more.Depending on the style of machine, front loader will have clips to undo the collar around the Hook, just take note as it comes apart how it will need to go back together....tilt the machine slightly backwards to stop it all falling out immediately (!!!)
Top loader will require the needleplate to be removed to get at the bobbin case.
You do not want to go trying to take the hook race apart unless you know exactly what you are calling what and know how to do it.

Handwheel will not turn

First check for thread tangled in the bobbin area and remove it & any lint and etc.

If it is a top loader you must remove the metal needle plate, if front loader, there will be two black clips holding the bobbin case secure with a retaining you remove them be careful to note the position and orientation of the bits so when you re-assemble, you know where everything goes......a couple of digi-photos are not a bad idea for this.

If there is no thread jam, the shaft, either upper or lower, may be seized......if you can remove the top and bottom casings, a little penetrating spray (WD40 etc) may work, leave for an hour and try to work it free by hand back and forth gently....sometimes it can take several applications and many days depending on the level of corrosion.

Don't "drown" it in oil, and having something like kitchen towel around inside the carcass to absorb excess and runoff.

If you have a casing that is moulded in 2 sections (front & rear) rather than several panels for top, sides and bottom, DO NOT ATTEMPT to open it, you will spend an age in frustration and probably break the casing, they are the devil to open when you have a service manual and NOT something you want to try at home. If you have the 2 piece case, try spraying inside with the small tube attachment on the can via bobbin winder hole, behind and to the right of the bobbin region and any where else you can get the tube, a couple of quick shots in several locations, go and have a nice cup of tea then come back and check for any movement.

If you want any more help with this, just post back here, or, drop a line through the "Contact Us" page at

Putting back the pieces of bobbin case on Kenmore Mini Handi

This is for front loading bobbin..........

The Shuttle hook will look very much like this, and marries this to the "half moon" of the fixed shuttle.

The retaining collar ring that holds it all together has a plate like protrusion (like bull horns), this faces to the top and to the back.......there should be a small lug (or two) with corresponding small hole or slot on the fixed housing (hook race) that locates the ring tightly in the correct position.

There should be 2 swivel arms (black plastic at 4 o'clock & 8 o'clock)) that move to hold the whole thing together by clipping onto a small lug on each side of the ring.

If you tip the machine 30 degrees on its back while you do all this, it makes the process easier, as things are less likely to fall the back with a soft object for convenience (tissue box, pillow etc)

The bobbin case goes in after the housing is assembled, if you try to do it first, it will prove more difficult.

If this is not quite accurate for your model a photo of the bits would be helpful
