Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Use the cord that came with the camera and plug it into a usb socket. make sure the camera is on and set to the upload control. Windows does the rest. Also the manual in a more comprehensive form is on the software Cd in th PDF file.

From your computer "to" the camera? This seems backwards but you would pop the SD card out and put it in a card reader (your USB cable might work too) and copy the files using My Computer. the camera will appear in My Comuter as a drive letter.

You can try getting an SD card reader with a USB connection. The computer will treat this as another input. You should see a file folder with JPG files in it. This will be your pictures. Just do a "copy" to another file on your computer. Several companys make these card readers. 2 are Vargus and Lexar. I purchased one for my wife's camera the other day at Walmart. It was a "Targus High Speed SD/SDHC Card Reader/Writer". It was around $8.

Try photo recovery software to rescue the lost pictures from the camera, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.
Photo Recovery (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery (for Mac OS X)
Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the memory card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.
