Is it alive but silent or just plain dead?

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

active but silent, it's annoying, it's one of the latest models though, 7.2 channel model, if there is a difference.

and i think it is internal, would you have an idea of any operating temperatures? and i did try it "naked", it's not the speakers, tested them my self, i spent a good while triing to figure out how a short could occur, the video processing stil works though, just not the audio.

on a side note, is there any telltale signs that a speaker has blown without plugging it in?

    I can't find the manual.

Turn the volume control to something medium.

The errant switch, control or condition may change and you will suddenly release the amp's full power and possibly destroying your speakers. If a signal isn't audible at 1/2 volume it's probably not there.

Carefully examine the front panel for clues like a misplaced Mute or Tape Monitor control or Multichannel Analog Input selected.

How does it work for test tones or just plain old FM?

You could tape the speaker leads across a small battery the speaker would click or sound like static if there is continuity from the wire through the voice coil. Or if you have an ohmmeter, just measure it for short or open = BAD. Something near the stated impedance is good.

Your problem is NOT a dead speaker.

Grab a volt meter and check your battery out. Take a look at the condition of wiring and connections on the battery, alternator and starter. whatever the cause it seems likely the start is not the issue here, often time 'no start' conditions can be linked to a faulty charging system. There is an excellent article available regarding this topic on,

Will not turn on.

DVD players are compact complex pieces of circuitry. They're easy enough to manufacturer on an assembly line, but there are so many little components that could break like diodes, chips, or a burned out resistor so unless you have the tools to trouble shoot that level of component there may not be a lot you can do.

Sounds like you have a voltmeter anyway I'm assuming you used to check for power coming into the unit, and you opened it up to check fuses.

Can you see if there is anything coming out of the transformer inside the unit? They don't usually go bad but some component between the transformer and the board could go bad.

As I eluded to above...once you get past the transformer, now you're talking about troubleshooting at the component level which with the tools you have you may not be able to do.

So I would as far the input power which you did, then what's coming out of the transformer. If you see nothing coming out of the transformer then the problem is somewhere between the transformer and input voltage.

If there is something coming out of the transformer probably in the 5V range or lower, then you'll have to trouble shoot components and circuits. At that point you either take it to a repair shop that has the tools (oscilloscopes, circuit testers) to trouble shoot that level of component. OR just go out and buy a new one. The prices on these things has really come down so you may pay more to have the thing repaired.

Good Luck!

No sound is coming out

Look for a button on the unit or remote for turning speakers on end off, Or when you go into the unit menu, Watch with the functions if it stays something about the speakers, Turnig them on or off, If you don,t come across any of this stuff, Get a manual for it, End see if you can find any thing about it in the manual, In the trouble shooting (Section) If you don,t have a manual for it, Try manuals

Sony model RXR-HX715. No power only fan is working

check for failure in the power supply, you must need a trouble shooting to check weather the power supply has enough output voltage.

Sony kv32v15 is dead with no sounds are lights. How difficult is it to replace the power supply / power management components?

since the problem is dead set all you need is open the back cover to trouble shoot, use digital tester. check blown fuse and then power on the unit check the output voltage at power supply panel board which supply the main CRT chassis board. if no output voltage check open fusible resistor its about .1 ohm, then check shorted rectifier diode and transistor sometimes cause by voltage fluctuation. just consider also the horizontal out put transistor it might be shorted cause by over current coming from power supply.

Hello im trying to trouble shoot two split systems the electrical wires were crossed for the two units I fixed it the compressors wont come on, wall unit says e7? This is on the Amcoraire ac split systems.

E7 indicates an "External Feedback Problem" which sounds like a communication problem. I believe there is a sensor cable that runs from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit also. Check that all cables are properly run to the appropriate unit and check all connections for tightness. Here is the link to a manual that includes installation and wiring instructions.

"Protect" and "Push Power"

Doiuble check your wiresa again for no pinches or shorts, even at the back of the unit. Also try unplugging the unit for 12 to 24 hours. If that does not help, it may be the time to buy a new stereo because that means there is a fault in the output device, unless you kinow someone who can trouble shoot and repair solid state electronics.
