Question about Kenmore 22.0 cu. ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator with Filtered Ice and Water
I'm trying to change the water filter in my Frigidaire side-by-side - model #FRS6LRSEW3 - and it will not budge. How can I loosen it?
My Frigidaire PureSource water filter housing wouldn't unscrew either. Even with the supplied plastic "wrench" and later a cloth-covered pipe wrench, it wouldn't budge. Since both my icemaker and my door dispenser stopped dispensing water, and the filter housing in the fridge wouldn't budge, I suspected that the filter was full of frozen water. (Sometimes things on the top shelf of the fridge freeze, so it was obviously too cold.) I used a hair dryer on the water filter housing for a few minutes, and then the water filter unscrewed easily. Sure enough, the whole inside was a block of frozen water.
This would have been such a simple repair, HOWEVER unfortunately it turned out that I wrenched it too hard and broke the inlet valve on the housing. As soon as I thawed out the filter and reassembled, water was pouring out of the top. Took off the big cover at the top ceiling of the fridge and saw my problem.
It's only about a $25 part, but I'd advise that you be careful to only turn, without rocking back and forth, the housing when trying to unscrew. I guess I wiggled it back and forth too much and cracked it.

You need two things. the most important is a bigger tool. The filter is just too tight for loosening by hand. use a big pair of channel locks or a smal pipe wrench to turn the filter body to your left when facing it. you won't hurt it. counterclockwise to remove it, clockwise to install it back. put it back a hard hand tight and make sure it doesn't leak when you run water through it. you don't have to turn off the water, but run plenty of water through the new filter to get the air out.
the second thing is to curse it properly and sincerely while loosening the old filter. the harder you have to work to loosen it, the more specific and socially unacceptable the curse words have to be. white collar and office type workers frequently fail at this part because they aren't really cursing from the heart. you have to mean it.

Tips for a great answer:
I appreciate your inquiry, bela_desousa!
From the information you have provided the water dispenser on your Frigidaire refrigerator is not dispensing. Have you recently changed your water filter? If you water filter has not been changed and is dirty or clogged it could lead to potential failure of your water dispenser. If the filter has been changed it could be a faulty dispenser. I would suggest consulting with a professional technician for proper diagnosis and repair. Hopefully this is helpful. -Matt
