Question about Amplifiers & Preamps

2 Answers

Carver C11 I have a 20 year old Carver C11 preamp. It works good except it makes a popping noise through the line output when it is on for an while. I believe it is a cap in the line output stage but cannot confirm. I have electronics experience and can do some repairs myself. Any suggestions on how to diagnosis the problem with only a Fluke 87 and no schematic.

Two questions: one the popping is a intermittant noise that occurs even with no input, and how do I indentify the tantalum caps, also would they show normal signs of cap damage, such as swelling or leaking.

Hello,
Try replacing the bead tantalum caps,it should reduce the output noise...but if there are any soldering problems in the hardware and output model im sorry to say you must replace the whole unit..Thank you...

Please post back how things turned on or for further assistance..

well you can get the sound without input, just by connecting it to power rite??...Yeah you can identify them by swelling or improper soldering..But if your not sure then call up a service person or whose experienced in this!!..Thank you...

Well, I also have some experience in old things.. Please let me know, does it have "rotary or slide switches" for selection of various inputs? if yes, kindly clean them with W-40 Contact Spray. I hope, problem will resolve there n then.

My carver HR - 895 was staticy at times on FM and all the sudden shut off. Now it won't Power up at all what do I do ?

Do you have an indicator light blinking or illuminated? If so, your amp has DC Offset, meaning a damaged amplifier. The static noise you heard, may have been DC voltage on the speaker output.

How to hook a carver TFM 45 to a Marantz AV 8003 pre amp with Bose 901 speakers thank you very much

The output of the Marantz will go to the input of the Carver. The Bose EQ has to go into a Tape Monitor on the Marantz, or, you can connect the Marantz output to the Bose line in(not tape in). The line output of the Bose, to the Carver input.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Carver TFM 35 amp what is the best way to hook it to a Marantz AV8003 pre app

No. You should use the line(or preamp output) to the Carver input. The only way you could use the tape output is if the Carver has input volume controls.

Hi...

Make sure your input cables are good and that your output cables are FIRMLY connected.

Does the problem change when you rotate either volume knob?

If this helps please rate my help

Thanks

I have a carver M 1.5 amp rt. channel is out.

Carver designs in general are not easy to repair. I would recommend that you send this unit into a Carver authorized service center. The likely problem is the output transistors, but the driver circuits and predrivers are not simple designs and if there is a problem there, it could effect the outputs. Tracing this will require equipment and schematics that I don't believe are available on the net.

Carver C11 preamp problem

I found out through the Carver Audio forums that metal shavings inside the case are an issue with this unit. So I used an achohol based spray and cleaned the switchs and the circuit board, (there was a fair amount of shavings found). It has been running for 14 hours with no problems.

Carver home amp

The DVD system problably doesent have PRE AMP outputs..you can take the record outputs from the DVD system and use them to connect to the input of the power amp. You then will need o use the Carvers volume controls as the volume controls as the record output of the DVD system will be a fixed output set at 0db.

Turntable to reciever connections

check the continuity in your cables. you will need a multimeter or something else to check the cables. the multimeter is about $10 or so. other than that, make sure that your turntable is actually giving output and that the pre amp is both recieving and sending(same with the regular amp. and make sure that the levels are up on everything and the speakers connected properly etc. you probably know this already, but sometimes a good, friendly reminder helps. good luck!!
