Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a GE side-by-side refrigerator that is not defrosting. I have checked the evaporator and it is iced up. I need to know how to put it on defrost manually, if I can, to check what component is deffective in the defrost system. PLEASE, PLEASE, I DO NOT NEED A GENERIC ANSWER SINCE THIS UNIT HAS A CONTROL BOARD AND HAS NO SCHEMATIC. Thank you very much. I dont mind paying if I get the answer for the right product

Have you tried cleaning the condensor coils. Also check the drain line going to the bottom and make sure its open. if the condensate cant drain it will just refreeze. let me know.

My GE model GSH25KGMB BB side by side refrigerator is not cooling on fresh food side. Freezer and ice maker side working fine. How should I troubleshoot this?

On your model I would go straight to the defrost heater and defrost thermostat and check them first after defrosting the evaporator first with a hair drier. Both parts need to be replaced=> WR51X10055 Defrost Heater Assembly 25953576-emtx2i4tcmlh0qfjbwwrn2z1-2-0.jpg and the=> WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat APPLIANCE 911

My GE side-by-side is not cooling.

The electronic control board is probably your culprit. These control boards control the compressor, fans and defrost. Look for any burned spots on the printed circuit bout it could be just bad.

Warm refrigerator. Iced over freezer back panel. Read that I could test defrost timer myself but don't know where it is located. Also, is this something I can replace myself if it is broken?

first of all there isn't a defrost timer in this model, its an adaptive defrost system controlled by the motherboard in the lower rear of the unit, first check the heater on the lower side of the evaporator coil, then if this reads continuity, secondly, check the defrost thermostat located near the top of the evaporator coil for 0 ohms like a switch(needs to be checked under 32 degrees or it will show open/bad)

Fridge and freezer running too warm

You will need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel inside the freezer. Check for ice or a frozen over evaporator coil. If frozen defrost and we will need to examine the defrost heater at the bottom of the evaporator. It may have a glass tube covering the heater element inside. I want you to check to see if it is burned out. The part number for the defrost heater is WR51X10042
You please let me know what you find. If the element is burned out I recommend you replace it and the defrost thermostat part number WR50X10068
You and order the parts by clicking the link below and entering the part number into the part number search feature and click FIND IT. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Water and ice in bottom of freezer, occasional water on floor

I believe your defrost condensate pan below the evaporator is blocked with ice and now when defrost happens the water pours over the tray and to the bottom of the freezer. You will need to defrost the ice in the collector tray and the pour a solution of hot water and clorox to make sure the water ends up in the condensate pan below your refrigerator. So unplug the refrigerator remove the panel and let me know what you find. I have some more solutions depending on what you see is happening. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Refrig not cold enough, ice buildup on banck panel of freezer

ice build up means your refrigerator is not going through defrost cycle. you have ice build up on evaporator which restricts your cold air flow into the fresh food side. check defrost timer, defrost thermostat located on evaporator behind the wall where your getting frost. check defrost heater. it wraps under the evap.

GE refrigerator not cold but Freezer works fine

you need to find out if the evaporator fan in the freezer is working. or if the evaporator is all iced up. If the fan is not working you will need to replace it. If the coils are all iced up you have a defrost problem and that will ned to be resolved. Once a evaporator is all iced over air can not pass through it and you will loose your cooling in the refrigerator first. Check the heater and the terminator to make sure they are good. You can use a hair dryer to clear the ice off the evaporator. Once you find the bad part replace it and the unit will function normally

GE refrigerator

this may be water from the defrost cycle. if this drains to tray over compressor, check tray is not too full (water evaporates from heat of compressor) otherwise defrost water will go to a seperate container which may have a split or is overflowing. fault can also be caused by poor door seals which would produce too much ice on evaporator pipes
