The cartridges are locked in and I cannot find anyway to remove them. HP says the machine must be on. I have done so, they will unsnap but can't pull them out. I do not see an unlock lever. Can you help

Unfortunately no, Printers require both cartridges to be installed and operational to enable the printer even if you are only printing black text. No way to bypass this "feature".
As this is a laser printer, the only supplies you need to install are the toner cartridges. These are a one piece unit with drum and toner all contained together. Open the fron of the machine and pull out the color that needs to be changed. Open the new box, gently rock the new cartridge front to back to ensure toner will print evenly. Remove the orange shipping locks being carefull not to touch the green drum. Insert new cartridge into printer and you are done. Printer should automatically perform a calibration after you close the front door.
Print cartridges might be improperly installed. Remove the print cartridge for the color that is
printing inconsistently and reinstall it.
im sure you tried this already, but thats from the manual.
also check your settings in the computer verify greyscale is not selected.

To calibrate the printer from the HP Color LaserJet 2500 Toolbox
1 Open the HP Color LaserJet 2500 Toolbox in one of these ways:
• On the desktop, double-click the HP Color LaserJet 2500 Toolbox icon.
• On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to HP Color LaserJet 2500, and choose the
HP Color LaserJet 2500 Toolbox.
2 On the Troubleshooting tab, click Diagnostic Tools (on the left side of the screen).
3 Click Color Calibration.
Then try a test page.

The NVRAM reset is done by powering off the machine. Press and hold the Go button. Turn the printer on and continue to hold the Go button. After the Go, Ready, and Attention LED's tuirn on, continue holding for at least 20 seconds. During this process, the Attention, Ready and Go LED's will each turn off. Release the Go button. The device LEDs will begin cycling from front to back. The NVRAM init process runs unitl the printer is in the Ready state.
How did you do the factory reset?
Take out all cartridges and heads then unplug for 30 minutes?
Plug back in and reseat all removed items?
If so you probably have a bad head.
You can order them through HP or Staples.
The heads have a very short life of 10,000 pages.
There's no sensor, it's just a spring and a plastic wedge thing.
Using a #10 torx driver, remove two screws holding the right-hand side panel from the printer. (one in the back, one on top underneath the ink access door.) Unsnap it and set it aside.
Disconnect 3 small ribbon cables and one 5-pin connector that lead from the printer to the access door/scanner.
Remove the lid from the flatbed, then remove the access door from it's hinges. Use the torx driver and unscrew the hinges from the main scanner body.
Lift the hinge assembly from the scanner and push the steel pin out, seperating the two parts of the hinge.
From there you should be able to loosen them up, remove the springs, lubricate them, or find whatever the problem is.
Last night I spent an hour with HP Technician on-line trying to diagnose the problem with my 2 year old HP Officejet 7210 All-In-One. After trying everything HP came up to resolve the problem, the technician determined it is a hard failure in the electronics hardware. Since my warranty is expired they offered me a deal on the L7680 All-In-One. My 7210 was very lightly used (still on first set of cartridges). If this is the quality of the latest generation of HP hardware, I am probably going to look at something else.
If I had it, and i was sure that I was using known good correct 56,57 or,58 HP cartridges in the correct slot to suit and cartridge contact membrane on back of cartridge slot was clean and I still found that the HP refused to accept them, then first I would check for a common fault....
Remove both cartridges have a really close look at the bent metal spring wire that sits in both slots, it is hooked on the right hand side of each compartment by plastic tabs and s shaped bend in the wire. I've seen these break at the tabs and then when cart is inserted they put a break in the contact membrane in the back of each slot. - replace carriage assembly
Wow that was hard to explain...anyway what is left is the possibility of a broken ribbon head carriage cable (make sure it is plugged in fully if brave enough to rip apart or it may be creased torn etc, or it could be a board fault, too expensive too fix. So I would send it to heavon..
You could try ebay or something to try to find a old model that suits your new hp cartridges.....
