I ran into this same problem when I used a program call "diskkill". I did not know that I changed the format of the drive using this program to wipe a virus off it. So how to fix it go to http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download the win98 boot disk .iso or a image create a bootable cd rom disk to reformat the corrupted drive. Have the system boot to the cd rom drive. have it boot to no ram drive. When the drive letter to the cdrom pops up, type fdisk hit enter. You are given 4 choices. press 1 enter. 3 enter it will verify drive, reboot using win 98 cdrom again no ram drive. at cdrom drive letter type format c: /s hit enter. That should will format your drive to be a fat 32bit. Reboot put your Windows disk in and let the system reformat the drive to NTFS or leave it at 32 bit, the limitation to a DOS format are 32gb.

If you have a windows install disk, then download active kill disk.

You need to erase the hard drive the right way, you don\'t format from NTFS to NTFS to erase a HDD.

Here is a free eraser, but you need to burn it to a **** and boot to it so it runs in DOS.
http://how-to-erase-hard-drive.com/downloadfree.htm

You can also go to Western digital and use the tools for HDD to erase.
Once the HDD is erased, your clear CMOS, reset the setting in the BIOS such as boot order, you should be able to reinstall windows and install all the correct drivers.

This hard drive needs to be repartitioned and formatted first then you should see actual amount. You can do this when selecting the drive in windows 7 installation

Hi, I've just bought a Sumvision Cyclone Primus 2TB and after connecting it to my laptop it installs the drivers. Once this is complete a Microsoft Windows pop-up comes up saying "you need to format...

Try putting the unit back on your laptop and using the windows disk management utility. The directions are below. Windows Vista is a bit differenct than either windows 7 or XP.

Right click on you "Computer" Icon in your start menu

A menu will open

Chose "Manage"

The Computer Management window will open

The Computer Management window is broken down into 3 sections.

The first section on the left side of the window shows a menu. Disk Management is on the lower portion of the menu.

The right side is separated into two sections, top and bottom. The top portion shows a list of active drives on the computer. The lower portion shows all drives connected to the computer. CD or DVD drives that have not disk will not show as active drives on the top section, but can be seen in the lower section.

The lower section will show the drive description, drive size and drive condition (online or off line) in small box on the left side of that section. Disk drives will designate a "Drive" and a number. Drive 0 is usually your internal hard drive. Then it would list drive 1, drive 2, etc, depending on how many internal and external drive sources you have connected to your computer. Then it will list your CD drives and generally show their drive letter assignments.

Next to the smaller section described above, is a larger section which shows the driver letter, size of the driver and condition (if working correctly will show "healthy")

This is the area you can right click and get a menu that will allow you to open, explore, mark the partition as active, change the driver letter, format the drive or delete a partition. (A note of caution here. Changing the driver letter on your main hard drive partition will cause windows to stop functioning. The main hard drive, or hard drive partition, is normally given the letter "C".) A hard drive may show two or more partitions with separate drive letters designated for each partition.

A drive that is having a problem may show that it needs to be formatted (status as Unformatted). This can be done from this window. An external drive, whether it is a hard drive or CD/DVD drive, can have the letter designator change done if you want to organize your external drives. There are times when a drive will not show up because the drive letter that they are programmed to use are taken. Most USB drives are programmed to us the letters "F" or "G". In this area, you can assign the USB drive any drive letter that is not being used and this will make it visible in windows.

See if this helps you manage the external disk and get it formatted so you can use it on your laptop.

If you found this answer helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback.

Thank You,

Brian

My external hard disc moder no : TS80GSJ25S shows there is no disc in your drive

If you have used this drive before then the drive is malfunctioning and my need to be formatted. If not, then the disk could need initializing and then formatting. You can check the status of the disk using the windows disk management utility. The directions to use this utility are shown below, If the disk does not appear in the manage disks section, check the connection to the computer, and try to power cycle the drive by unplugging it, waiting for about 20 seconds and then plugging it back in. This may renew the connection and restart the drive.

Disk management utility will help you see all the drives that are connected to your computer, including internal hard drives, CD or DVD Drives, and removable storage like USB sticks and external hard drives. Using this utility, you can check for attached drives that are not visible in windows when attached to your computer. You can also format drives, change drive letters, mark a partition as active and delete partitions. A word on caution about using the Disk Management Utility: This utility can cause destruction of data. If you are not sure of what you are looking at and uncomfortable with using this utility you should consult with an advanced user before making any changes to drives using this utility.

How do i format my laptop off of the partition on the hard drive. I've managed to hit f 10 and get into the bios but no format option was given

Formatting the hard drive is not a function of the BIOS. You will need to boot the machine from either the Windows CD and do a fresh setup (which will give you the option to format the hard drive) or boot from a bootable CD or floppy disk that has the format command on it. From there you execute the format command and follow the directions.

If your Laptop is purchased with Recovery Disk, you can use that disk to restore the default setting of your laptop. It usually FORMAT your hardisk and erase all programs and files saved on your Hardisk. If Recovery Disk is not available then you can simply use your provided Windows Installer to format your Laptop and install a Fresh Windows on your Laptop, be sure to format the Whole Disk Drive to erase the files.
