If your computer has a wireless network adapter, Windows will automatically detect wireless networks in range of your computer. You can see a list of wireless networks that Windows has detected in Connect to a Network.

  • Open Connect to a Network by clicking the network icon (eff2d36c-9e0d-4d1a-9859-3af14fa4ccfc_73.jpg or da12251d-1e9a-4032-afae-009876c6c5a3_80.jpg) in the notification area.

If Windows doesn't detect a network that you think is in range of your computer, it could be because of one of the following reasons:

  • The wireless switch on your computer is turned off.

Many laptops have a wireless switch on the front or side of the computer. If your computer has a switch, make sure it's turned on. Some computers also use a function key combination to turn the switch on or off. Check the information that came with your computer for details on locating the wireless switch.

  • Your computer is too far from the wireless router or access point.

Move your computer closer to the router or access point. If the computer is portable, try moving it around to determine the range of the wireless signal and the best place to use the computer.

If you can't get closer to the router or access point, consider buying and installing an external antenna for your wireless network adapter. Many wireless network adapters are set up so that you can attach an external antenna to them, which provides better reception than a built-in antenna. Check the information that came with your wireless network adapter to see if you can install an additional antenna.

  • The wireless router or access point is turned off or isn't working properly.

There are two things to try:

    • Make sure the router or access point is turned on and that the wireless signal light is illuminated.

    • Reset the router or access point by unplugging it, waiting at least 10 seconds, and then plugging it back in.

Cant access wireless network

Wireless zero configuration is the feature of Windows XP that allows Windows to detect the available wireless networks and automatically connect to the most preferred wireless network.

It is enabled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Windows XP. It provides auto wireless network detection when you switch on the computer.
Follow the steps below to verify that the service is running:
1. Go to Start and right click My Computer. Select and click Manage.
2. Computer Management window will appear. Under Services and Applications, select Services.
3. Check for the service Wireless Zero Configuration. Make sure that it is started and that the startup type is set to automatic.
computer-management.jpg4. If it isn't, double-click the service. If the startup type is not set to automatic, click on the dropdown arrow and and change it to automatic. Click OK at last.
autostart-wireless-zero.jpgIf your wireless adapter driver does not support wireless auto onfiguration, you will notice the following:
- The network adapter does not appear as a wireless network adapter in Network Connections. It appears as a LAN adapter, similar to an Ethernet connection.
- The properties of the wireless connection do not have a Wireless Networks tab.
- You do not receive a Windows XP notification bar message indicating that wireless networks are available.
To get the most out of your Windows XP wireless experience, you should contact wireless adapter manufacturer to obtain the latest version of the drivers that support this XP feature.
If not, you must manually configure wireless network settings using the configuration software supplied with the wireless network adapter.

Make sure the router is turmed on and the wireless light should be on. (install the router if u had received any cd along with the wireless router.
if still your wireless connection is not detected simply remove all the wireless profiles on the. restart the PC and the router. once it is started the the network should be detected.

Cannot link to wireless thompsoncontrollerinternet

it maybe a firewall blocking access or the secruity code 1) disable the firewall and see if it now connects 2) log into the router and goto the wireless section and remove the secruity now see if that will connect a useful tool to use, if you can copy onto the PC, http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php this will detect all the networks broadcasting - so you can now see if the adapter will detect your wireless network

I have a linksys wireless usb card and it is not detecting my secured wireless network after configuring it

We need to know the wireless settings on your wireless access-point/router.

Check if the SSID broadcast is enabled on the wireless access-point. If it is disabled, then you have to manually add the SSID to the wireless adapter and make sure the wireless security such as WEP or WPA keys are correct.

You may also enable SSID broadcast so that the wireless adapter will detect your wireless network.

Also, you may try to change the wireless channel to 6 or 11.
