My lcd screen beeps and displays the following flashing numbers: c:31:22. According to the manual, this should be easy to correct. I have tried using my battery and the wall plug in unit, I have left the tape case open to "dry because it may be moisture" and none of these work. Could it be the tape that I am using? I have always used Fuji, now I have a Maxell (but it looks cheap???) Any advice?

when problem occur while cam is operating, the self-diagnosis function starts working, and may display the service mode display code. in your case, C:31:40, pertains to a part of the cam tape compartment mechanism called the drum that doesn't start up. issues could prevent you from recording, playing back tapes, rewinding or fas forwarding. t/s steps are: try diff tapes esp. w/prev recordings, reset cam (press reset button while cam is on, located just below the menu button, in the panel where the lcd screen goes to), power reset (remove batt and ac adapter and leave cam w/ any power source for at least a minute). if issue persists, unit will require repair. hope this helps.tnx:)
what does c31.23 mean when showing on the screen.can i fix the problem myself or do i have to get a professional to fix it.when i try to use the video a beeping noise and the above number is displayed on screen
With Sony camcorders, if there is an error, it will display an error code on the LCD screen, usually flashing. Make a note of it, search for your model number and the error code and you can most likely find the solution.
As your buttons are working when you press buttons on LCD panel ,The LCD strip which connects LCD Panel to main circuit board (called main board or mother board) is partially dammaged. The symptom changes as per the actual cutting of that strip. after replacing the strip FP-*** will solve the problem. FP-is the part No. If you want correct part code I can give you later as I have to chk in service manual
You may have a problem with the image sensor device (CCD). From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling from and to addresses within the United States and US Territories for service to correct this issue.
To see if you have this problem:
Power On your camcorder (make sure the battery is fully charged).
Check the LCD screen and verify that the display icons are turned on. If you cannot see the icons, press the Display button until the icons are visible.
Put a tape in the camcorder.
With the lens cap off, record some video. NOTE: Be sure to speak during the recording so the video will contain your voice.
Rewind this section of the tape (using tape counter to verify start of your recording).
Play back the recorded video and use the LCD screen on the camcorder to view it. You should hear the audio you recorded and the Display icons/text will still appear.
If your camcorder is affected by this CCD issue, the picture will either be extremely distorted, or there will be no visible picture (just a blank LCD screen with the display icons still visible).
