Question about IBM 3581 Ultrium Ultrium Tape Drive

Open Question

I have a ibm lto ULT when tivoli tries to uncharge the cartridge, the changer becomes unavailable, the hardware gets alarm led on and displays a BF02 error code. Tivoli doesn't detects that the changer has became unavailable, but the error is there still. what does this error code means, and what should i do for further analysis or better to solve the problem? the server is a windows 2008 server, lenovo thinkServer, using an Adaptec Scsi Card 29320LPE. On windows's device manager, the scsi card looks ok, the changer is recognized as IBM 3581TA2 LTO and is ok, the tape unit is recognized as IBM 3580TD2 scsi sequential and is ok too. I have an unknown device called bus SM controller but i believe it has nothing to do with this issue. Thank you in advance for the help

SOURCE: How can I turn on/off hardware compression in Windowns 2003 Server

Hardware compression is more efficient and faster than software compression and under normal constancies you won't want to do that. Having said that if your drive allows it you would need to download and install a software utility made by your tape manufacturer. That what you will use to turn off that functionality; not a setting on the PC or the backup software. Bottom line is you will need to talk to IBM support. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear but I just went through this with HP a few months ago. They have a general purpose utility that turns off the hardware compression, does a drive analysis, a cheapo write current alignment, firmware update and a few other neat tricks.

SOURCE: Loading Media

Exact same problem with our Quantum SuperLoader 3 LTO-2 Tape Drive. I start the Sequential ops but when the first tape is full, the BackupExec software sends a message asking for Loading a new media instead of ejecting the tape. In fact, I think that it is the tape drive job to unload the tape when it is full.

If I eject the tape from the Backup exec job menu, it does not work at all. I have to manually move the tape from drive to slot 1 then the drive automatically move the tape from slot 2 to drive and at that time, backup exce continues the backup. Our backup takes 3 tapes so we have to manually move all 3 tapes manually. It is really strange. Looks like a lot of people are having this problem.

I did a lot of research on quantum sites and symantec sites but nothing so far.

thanks to anybody who can help on this one.

The error is because the driver isn't loaded for the device. Look up how to add the device in symantec help. If windows recognizes it already then usually you can go to devices and add teh device from within symantec.

Is there a serial # on the tape?

There is an RFID chip in the LTO cartridge that identifies the tape. Typically, barcodes are used by tape drives and silos to ID a tape.

Probably not for direct service unless you still have a contract with them but there are many 3rd-party suppliers and vendors out there AND there is plent of information on LTO-2 at the IBM website.

Tivoli Audio Music System: CD wont eject

We've had the Tivoli Music System for 3 years. A CD became stuck in the player when I pressed the EJECT button before turning the player on. We tried turning it off and back on, unplugging it for a minute, removing the batteries and unplugging, etc. Nothing worked. I finally turned the player upside down in my lap, then turned on the CD player, and it said LOADING! Progress!!! I turned it right-side up and hit EJECT, and it worked like new. The CD loading mechanism had become bound up and simply needed a different "attitude" adjustment. Don't give up too early in attempting to fix these players on your own.

Hi,

if you "have not" using Backup Software (e.g. Symantec Backup Exec, CA), you can try this IBM LTO-4 driver for Win2K.
