Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

We misplaced the original cord and tried another one that ended up being too high in voltage. Now we found the original cord - but the WD my book will not show up the computer. The blue light flashes for awhile. But nothing comes of it. Is this the end of the harddrive?

You may have fried the power supply. Try taking the hdd out of the case and intalling in into a desktop computer.

My wd hardrive wont power on

look at power pack and look for the polarity diagram. get a multimeter and test the power that the pack is providing and make sure it is outputting what the pack says it is supposed to. if the pack is not at correct voltage, then this is most likely your problem. find another pack (MAKE SURE VOLTAGE AND POLARITY ARE SAME!!!! if voltage is correct but polarity is backwards, cut cord and swap wires before post to change it, or find another pack.) If the power pack checks out, then you need to open the WD case up and inside you will find a standard desktop 3.5" hard drive. most likely sata. remove from case and install it in a desktop computer and see if it will power and mount. if it will then the circuitry in the WD case is bad. If hard drive will not mount or show up then the hard drive is bad. If The WD case is the problem check circuitry for bad caps, transistors and voltage regulators. replace as needed. or just keep the hard drive in your pc as a permanent upgrade.

My dog ended up shewing the power supply cable. I bought a new one (original) and now It wont turn on. How can I fix it?

try a different wall socket and check the chewed cable and make sure it has no defects near the end where it plugs in. Double check the original cable as well and compare wattage, voltage, and resistance. Write down any model number and try to do an internet search on that number. If the first few hits are power cables, insure it is the one you ordered.

The Western Digital hard drive My Book Elite does not show up on the computer screen when plugged in to the Mac computer. It has the blinking light that shows that it is thinking, and everything else...

hello

i have the same issue, exact same unit MY BOOK ELITE WD 500G ..
FYI: if this doesnt work, it is a power module (inside the black box, MY BOOK ELITE) needs to be replaced.

UNPLUG both cables from MY BOOK ELITE WD - restart your computer

- with respect to the MY BOOK ELITE WD , make sure the power cord is plugged into AC outlet wall only, and the other end of the USB into computer only -- but disconnect both from the MY BOOK WD ELITE and leave unplugged for 20 minutes .

after 20 minutes have elapsed, plug the USB cable only for 1 minute , into MY BOOK ELITE WD. Then plug the power cord into the MY BOOK WD Elite. see if it works

if this doesn't work, let the drive sit for 24-48 hours.. then repeat above instructions -- this is how i got mine to work again. FYI: To avoid this issue, i just leave the unit plugged in , while computer is running

BUT -- be aware... i use UPS (Uninterruptable power supply) to avoid power failures throughout the house. So , i suggest , if you want to leave the computer running, use a power supply to run the computer if the AC power fails..

please issue 4 thumbs up

WD Mybook I TB hard drive won't power up

It could be the power adapter but you'll need to verify that the wall outlet or power strip you have it plugged into actually has power. If it's a power strip make sure that it is turned on and has power and also plug the adapter into a different outlet on the strip as individual outlets can go bad or have a bad connection.

My book not recognized by windows

I had a similar problem that I just fixed. The drive was not being recognized at all - I unplugged, rebooted, switched to different computer, used different usb cable, plugged into wall outlet, NADA!

Then I tried something else - I just bought 2 more external hard drives and I switched the power port from the new one to the old one and the hard drive was recognized. I plugged the old outlet into the new hard drive and that worked, too. PHEW!

I had almost 100Gbs of music on there!
