Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell Vostro 1700, running Windows XP. My DVD is an HL-DT-ST-DVD+-RW GSA-T21N and it plays and burns CDs with no problem. However, even though the device can be seen and is named DVD/RAM Drive in My Computer, when you place a DVD movie in the drive it won't recognize it. It will recognize a DVD with software on it (recent upgraded Finale with a DVD), but not anything else in terms of DVD. It tries to start, clicks and spurts and you hear the revolutions begin but then stop. I have read every forum and tried everything: uninstalling the DVD so the driver will reload, removing upper and lower filters, upgrade the drivers, and nothing has caused it to work. A little history: it worked when I first got the laptop then stopped. I was able to fix it by doing something with removing (I thought) a nVidia driver...I found this advice on a forum a few years ago and it worked. However, I can't find that information and it's back to it not working again. Not sure if it has to do with Windows upgrading (been trying to figure out why it stopped again), but, regardless, I want my DVD player/burner back! Can you help?

    Unfortunately, i can't spend any more time on this today. Thank you very much for your efforts. I have to figure out how to get the display problems fixed now, but I'll most likely reinstalling the nVidia program.

Hello,

what region are the dvd's that you are trying to play? and have you changed the region of your drive? To check that right click on your dvd drive and select properties, then hardware, select it from the list and click properties. Open the DVD region page and check what region it is now.you should have 5-4 changes remaining, set your region to the region of the dvd - or what the region of most of your dvd movies is and then try playing it.

let me know

    Intresting, I'd like to take a look at it if thats ok with you?

    For remote support I use teamviewer.

    Send me the ID and password and lets take a look at it.

    Normally the remote support goes for 50$ on the top right corner of this page, but I'll take a look for no cost to you now.

    Let me know if you are having any new problems and we will sort them out.

    So we uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, which did not help, you can get them from

    I'm very tempted to suggest trying to reinstall windows to the computer and see if the drive works, but that will take alot of time.

    I'll look into an alternative to test the dvd drive outside of windows and see if it plays the dvd movies.

    If you have a USB memory stick, I'd suggest that you download and create a ubuntu live cd or a usb memory stick, and try to play a movie in the linux enviroment if the movie plays there, it confirms that there is a problem with windows.

My hl-dt-st dvd+-rw gsa t21n is corrupt!

I suspect that you are running Vista on your computer. If you have service pack 2 installed, then this is the reason for the missing drivers. When Microsoft issued SP2, they improved it worse. To make things worse, they will not correct the problem, instead, they issued Windows 7. Uninstalling the Windows drivers might help, but did not work for me. At start up, Windows should find the DVD drive as a new device, and ask for permission to look for and install the drivers. Click on no, and Windows will look for alternate drivers, from the firmware.
