Question about Craftsman 33 gal Air Compressor 6 hp Horizontal k Oil Free Pump

1 Answer

I have an older 33 gallon horizontal craftsman compressor. In December I turned the compressor on in my unheated garage when the temp had been in the 20's for days. It seemed to run normally at first. Then after just a short time I heard a loud pop and air leaking under pressure. I immediately shut it off. It sounded like the air line blew but it wasn't the air line. I turned it on yesterday for the first time since then with the temp well above freezing and it ran built and up pressure. But when it reached the threshhold and shut off again I heard the sound of air leaking under pressure. It took 3 or 4 minutes to fully depressure - ize. Can you tell me what the problem could be?

It sounds like the pressure safety valve could be acting up. It is designed to open when the tank pressure it too high and they don't always reset until the pressure is down to nothing. Some models have them included on the gauge manifold and some on the top of the tank under the cover. It is also possible that the upper limit on the motor switch is set a little too high which would also cause the valve to "pop" before the compressor shuts off.

hi,
one thing that would be worth checking is the pressure release valve which is usually located on the bottom of the unit. This valve is suppose to be used each time the unit is turned off. For obvious safety reasons you should release the pressure from the tank each time you are done using it. If this valve is leaking or was left open then you will not be able to achieve the desired full pressure. Just checking if this is tight may be your solution! Hope this helps!

I am changing the belt on a oil less 33 Gallon vertical 1.6 hp Craftsman Compressor and want to know if the bolt that holds the piston rod on is left hand or right hand threads?

This is standard thread, right to tighten and left to loosen.

Make sure to put a small amout of loctite on the threads when you put it back together.
