It should work outright, checked Emachines support page to see if there was an updated bios but sadly there is not. You can try inserting the two 1gb sticks and then clearing the cmos with the jumper on the motherboard. Let me know if that works.

1)Check for BIOS update from emachines. Older computer may need updated BIOS to handle the increased memory.

2) If it does start up but the computer crashes or it will not load windows, Verify the sticks are error free with a memory diagnostic program like memtest. If the sticks have errors, get them replaced.

My e-machines will not let me upgread my ddr2 1eb memory

That Machine would take DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrade chips. The max that system could take would be two 1GB sticks for a total of 2GB or 2048MB of memory. Memory is fairly easy to damage with static discharge and is also very easy to not put in all the way. When putting it in, unplug the power from the computer, push and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to help discharge power from the computer, Line up the pins on the memory and push them into place till the little arms at the sides of the slot pop up and click into place. I'd install one chip at a time, powering the machine up after the first chip to make sure it works, then starting over again. The only time I'd install both chips at the same time would be when installing a memory kit (two or more chips in one package), in which case, install both chips before powering it on.

RAM chip sets

It is OK to mix chip (SODIMM) capacities in the 2 slots in your notebook.

The best system performance will be when you have 2 x 512MB but for now if you install 1 x 512MB, you could even leave the old chip in the other slot, it'll be fine.

Emachines T5082 Adding 512Mb ram. Getting slot 0 installed slot 1 not installed.

Try swapping the memory in the two slots. It sounds like either one of the memory chips is bad or one of the memory slots is bad.
If you find that one of the slots is bad, then you might try just putting a 1GB Chip in the slot that works.

I have a L7VMM2 - Rev 2 motherboard with a Athlon 2400 processor. I have replaced the 2 x 256 Mb ram chips (PC2100) with 2 x 1Gb PC2700 chips. Total memory is reported as 1Gb (i.e. 2 x 512). I am (almost)...

Have you checked the posibility of 512 Mb limit per slot for your motherboard? This is often at some older mobos. The manufacture page for your mobo is here check the revision you own.

I have installed one 1gb chip into my emachines t5082 computer and it worked fine. So I got another and removed the original 512 MB chip from it and it won't recognize the second 1gb chip.

I'm assuming that your 2nd DIMM is the same type and speed as the 1st one you put in. If you are not sure, check and make sure that it is DDR2, 533MHz, PC4200.

If they are not the same, that is most likely the problem.

If both DIMM's are the same, remove them both and then put one of them back into DDR2 Slot 1. Start your computer and see if the computer recognizes the memory. Remove it and try the other DIMM in the same DDR2 Slot 1.

If both work OK, the problem is on your mainboard.

Memory Problem

Sounds like the memory chip is either the wrong frequency or it's bad. The frequency or type of memory for your machine is PC4200 or 533mhz, make sure the new chip is a PC4200 chip. If it is, then the chip may be bad. They are very static sensitive, and I've had a few bad chips straight out of the box. I've also ran into a couple of chips that were marked wrong and not the frequency on the label. This is definitely an issue with the memory chip and not your machine.
