Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

My washer stopped draining and would not run again. I have drained it using the valve on the bottom front and attempted to run a cycle of any kind, but it only filled to a point, began to run and I had the same problem all over again. It would not rinse or drain and stopped running. When I try to start a cycle now it locks, spins a couple of times one direction, then one more time around the other direction and stops and unlocks. the timer continues and it locks and unlocks while it repeats this same thing over and over again. What can I do?

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
I don't know the make and model of your machine as unfortunately you have not mentioned it but it's not a problem. You mentioned draining using 'the valve on the bottom front'. I think you might be refering to the cover of the filter- the filter is just inside ;-0)
I would suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor lint tray/filter. So many intermittent 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not go to spin or release the door lock if there is water still left inside.
Here are my complete and general pre-typed (!) guidance notes for checking both the drain filter and the drain motor ;-0)
-------------------------------------

If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!) and most are held in by a round cover/knob.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT!
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. If it doesn't work then the motor is malfunctioning!

Hope the filter is the problem and good luck!

1. washer will not proceed to next cycle 2. water remains in washer, and can't open 3. not draining 3 won't drain even when manually advancing cycle

This is the drain cycle and it shows that the drain is not working at all. So make a test with the washer on in the drain cycle and test the voltage on the drain pump./valve, if voltage ispresetnthe drain valve/pump is faulty or cloggged. If there is no votage then the program controller is faulty. you might ahve to check if the controller can be rectified or replaced as a whole.

My frigidaire front washer says EFO at the end of a cycle. What is this, and I still have suds in my clothes.

Frigidaire, Zanussi, AEG, & More....

EFO = Filter Blocked (low flow) and it is accessible from the bottom front of the machine.

1. there is a blockage in the filter or drain hose.takes too long to drain out.
2. over dosing of powder or liquid. again can cause an air lock in the pump which slows the drain pump down.

Check the filter and drain hose and test again. this fault will only come up at the end of a cycle.
You do not need to reset the machine to get rid of the fault code as this is automatically deleted.

Run an empty load with no detergent in an attempt to get rid of the code.

Frigidaire front loading washer stopped at rinse cycle. 3 beeps

When in doubt check the easiest thing to check. The pump can cause a number of errors to come up. Since the unit stopped in rinse I would start but checking to make sure there is nothing obstructing the pump before going to the expensive parts.

My washing machine runs forever. It takes like 2-3 hours to get through a 45 minute cycle. It also comes up with suds alot. I am using the HE detergent what is wrong???

I had the same problem with my front load washer. A technician came and fixed it and showed me what to do in the future if it ever happened again. I had to take off the front bottom panel, and on the lower right side there was a screw-top about the size of a golf ball. When I unscrewed it -- have you a bucket ready -- water would drain out and the drain would be stopped up with all kinds of stuff -- chapstick containers, baby socks, q-tips, toothpicks, hair, etc. Once this was unstopped, I would screw the top back on and it would be good for a couple of months. Whenever it started taking a really long time for the clothes to wash or the clothes were coming out too wet, I knew the drain was stopped up again. This is probably also the cause for the suds -- it's just not draining properly. Hope this helps -- I had SO many problems with my front load (with the biggest being stinky laundry), I got rid of it and got a basic washer and dryer.
