When it goes black, shine a light on the screen, can you still see your desktop very faintly?

My IBM THINKPAD T42 screen turns to black after 30 to 40 seconds when i turn it on.

This indicates a hard drive problem, have it tested to confirm, because the hardware may need to be replaced. First try and reload windows with cd installation disc if that does not work the hard drive must be suspect.

My computer (IBM Thinkpad t42) keeps going from an IBM screen to a blue error screen over and over. Then it goes to a windows error recovery screen. Please help!

One of those screens will provide you with an error code or a more detailed description of why it crashed. Please provide that information...

Screen goes black when move or touch and start reboot

Operate your unit from battery, then use the unit with the charger plugged into AC. Try to recreate the failure with each power source. If it fails on battery only, you may have either an intermittent battery pack or poor contact in the battery bay.

IBM Think Pad screen is out. Turned black can't see any images. Can't find a Model number such as T42 or anything like that. What to do?

try to do this:

- remove the battery and charger (everything connected to the pc) then press the power button for 1 minute..
- plug back in the charger
- after few secs try to turn it on

hope this helps :D

you may check also the sticker on the back of the laptop where in you can see the SN or S/N and also the Model number

My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

IBM thinkpad t42 boot up problem.

The most common reason is memory.

First, try to reseat (remove and reinsert).

If still a problem, test one module at a time.

Hope this helps.

Ibm t42 display turns off as if I had shutdown

You can test the computer this way. Connect the video output at the back of the laptop's base to a known working monitor. If the problem disappears completely then you know it is a screen problem, mostly likely. But if the same thing happens with the known working monitor connected to the Thinkpad, then you very likely have the BGA problem, a part that was soldered less than well (due to the restriction of lead not being allowed in the solder due to government regulations). And it may also be caused by flexing the base due to moving the laptop with poor support for its weight and resulting motherboard flex on rather delicate microsoldering. There are several services that "reball" the Ball Grid Assembly, and there are motherboards available as well that can replace the non-working ones. This is not a cheap fix to undertake but it can be done.

Black screen

there three issues with think pads that are common for this issue

1 bad inverter board
2 bad ccfl lamp in the lcd screen
3 bad video chip or other issue on the mother board

Inverters are not hard to replace and can be done by most people with patience and soft touch
ccfl bulbs require service techs with specialized skills to replace them, the lcd has to e taken apart or completely replaced
motherboards or video cards are much more complex issues and need service centers or techs with the requisite skills
