Question about HP Media Center M1050Y PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have an HP m1050y Media Center XP desktop pc, and I need to replace the video card to run some new software that requires OpenGL2.0 support. The software manufacturer suggested upgrading to at least a Nvidea GE Force 9800 or above, or the ATI Radeon 4xxx. For additional performance they suggested the Nvidea GE Force GTS or the Radeon 5xxx. My question is will these newer suggested cards fit and work on my old pc? Also, are other hardware upgrades necessary to make this all work such as power supply. This system currently uses a 300w ps. Appreciate any suggested answers so that I can pursue purchasing the correct components.

These newer video cards should be able to fit in your computer. According to HP, you have a PCI Express slot, which is what the video cards use to communicate. It is a first generation slot, however, so you won't get maximum performance out of a lot of the newest or highest end cards. One of the 9800 or 4XXX series cards should do nicely. The only other thing you should be concerned with is the power supply, which should probably be sufficient, wattage wise. All these video cards require a direct connection to the power supply, so you need to see if your power supply has the connectors required. You will need either a dedicated video card connector, or 2 molex connectors, which is probably what you'll have. Molex connectors normally attach to hard drives and CD drives. They have 4 pins in a single row and there are usually multiple connectors on the same cable. If you have 2 of these open, you can use an adapter to convert them into one of the PCI power connectors, which has 6 pins in 2 rows. The video card might come with one (they often do), but if it doesn't, one shouldn't cost more than a few dollars. Good luck!

Can I install pci-e X 16 2.1 video card onto my HP Pavilion Media Center m8400f PC

Its a slot distribution both 2.0 and 2.1. 2.1 is a bit faster as it leads with version. You can install any VGA card that supports it but keep it in your mind that more heavy vga card will require more power. So, you power supply should be heavy and should bear more power for your card as well as your system.
Sometimes, it require to change the power supply as well.
best of luck!

Hello
The x300 is video only. There is a possibility you may have knocked your sound card out of its pci slot while working inside the case.

Check that the sound card is firmly seated in the slot.

If you do not have a sound card and are using onboard sound, reinstall the sound drivers.

Enjoy your new gt 240.

You might need to uninstall the old video card device, so Windows does not use the old drivers for the new card.
Another option is to try and boot in Safe Mode (press F8 during startup), so Windows uses the VGA mode (which all video cards support), and then install the proper driver.
Installing the latest ATI driver updates might also not be a bad step.

Open your computer casing where the motherboard lies in and then remove the memory card, your new video card and then reset the BIOS, refer to the motherboard manual on how to do it. After resetting, plug in the memory card and video card. Close the casing and connect all the wiring. Power up your computer.

HP Media Center m1195c PC

It's a rather indepth process and is usually just easier to replace the computer.  Motherboards have many different adapters / slots / options.  If you're meaning to replace the motherboard and processor cpu, it'd be best to buy a package deal from newegg / tigerdirect / etc.  To be able to use your other components, you'd have to make sure the new motherboard has the same type memory slots, video card slot, etc.

I have an HP with Media Center as well.

Generally you need a software program that specifically records streaming audio and or video. A freeware program I use is OpD2d. Google it and install. Very simple to use.

It's probably something to do with your video card. The card could need replaced or there could be a bent pin in the plug. Check for the bent pins first.
