Question about Shop Vac 201-13 Wet/Dry Vacuum

1 Answer

I have a shop vac model 90ln650c. The switch went bad on it, I'm in the process of putting a 120v house on/off switch in it. From the vac going to the original switch is 2 red wires, a black wire, and a white wire. Do I separate the red wires and connect one to white and one to black?

I've tried a few things without any luck. The two red wires come from the left and right side of the motor, they connect into the windings on each side. I don't believe they ever come in contact with each other. Also from the motor are a black and a white wire. On the original switch there are 4 poles. 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. When the switch is thrown, the top poles connect with the bottom poles but they are separate. The top left pole does not close the circuit to the bottom right pole and vica versa. Since the original switch is like that then a black wire has to be on one of the top poles and the white wire has to be on one of the bottom but same side poles. (this is my thinking) So, I have 6 wires, 2 coming from the wall (black and white) 2 coming from the vac (black and white) and 2 more coming from the vac (red and red which I have determined to be coming from both coils in the motor) I've connected the blacks and the whites through the new 2 pole switch, nothing. Same as before with reds connected to each other, nothing. Same as the first one with 1 red to black and 1 red to white, nothing. Same as the first one with both reds to black, nothing. The only thing I haven't tried yet is both reds on the white wire. I'm lost on this one. I know the motor is good, I can reconnect the old switch and it works fine but if I do it that way then the only way to turn it on and off is with the plug in the wall because the actual switch is inside the casing.

The House on/off switch is most likely a spst switch. You need a dpst switch.

You put your switch across the same two wires that were on the old switch

    Forget the YES

The black and white are your ac power cord
The two red may be the the two wires from the motor

Older model shop.vac parts/owners manuel

Hi, I know on my Craftsman shop vac 2 different sizes of vacs that I use, I try and stick to the craftsman filters, but you can use other brands if they are not available or you want to save some ( $ ) ? As far as a manual for this vac, more then likely you will have to go to the maker and distributor as Sears, O.C.Hardware also sell there products. You may have to go with a manual that is the same peak H.P.and gallons that covers all different makes and models. Filter wise, make sure you have the right ones on or off when using the wet or dry pick-up settings.
Sincerely,

I have a shopvac model#86776-24. The toggle switch went bad and I'm looking for a replacement switch

I got a replacement switch at a local electronic supply store: Philmore Miniature Rocker Switch part number 30-043. Shop vac changed the switch recently to two push buttons from the old rocker style. This update works a lot better.

Replace switch on electrolux 2100

The 2100 is an older model which is prone to rocker switch failure. What you see outside is only a switch button. Underneath is a plastic rocker which sits in a grove and pivots back and forth to activate the on off switch.
If you push the switch down and there is no audible "click" you Likely need the rocker itself, especially if you tip the vac upside down and shake it and hear a piece rattling inside or find a broken narrow plastic finger about 1/2" inch long when opened.
However if it clicks and works every 3-5 times, the rocker is fine and you will need the spring mechanism and switch button which you can see form outside.
To remove either the process is the same.
Separate the body by opening the bag cage and pulling the two bumpers forward with a set of pliers. They are locking keys. Once removed, the rear housing will drop off allowing the vac to hinge open back to front. Do this with the vac laying upside down and observe the hinge section of the front bag door .DO NOT REMOVE THE MOTOR. You will need to clip all these componnets back together to reassemble and slide the bag chamber back to seat against the motor with the motor housing engage in the ribbing of the vac side walls.
With the vac open you will only need to remove the spring loaded bag lockout switch and the bag housing it sits on, not the motor or rewind..
Once removed there will be 6 chrome philips screws visible. These hold the top trim on the front of the vac and the front ones hold the on off switch into its housing. At the very front will be two screws going through a black or whitish switch housing. That housing will lift out with wires attached to reveal the switch rocker, etc,. This portion will lift back and out at about 45 degrees of the inner housing, as a unit. The switch button sits atop the rocker via two end tabs and will pop off the housing to reveal if the rocker itself has a broken "finger" or if the button has a weak spring.
The suspect spring is not the coil rocker spring but the thin U shaped spring on the underside of the switch button. Remove the rocker spring with a pair of needle nose pliers.and examine the rocker comparing to your new one.Use more vaseline on the new rocker and if you have it reinsert the clear flex plastic into the coil spring. If not disregard.
Re-installation is the reverse order, tuck switch back in at 45 degrees from back to front.
Pay special attention the the rubber seal at the back of the bag cage.
If anything is misaligned in this body you will fight to reassemble. Don't fight it , back up and look at your work. When and ONLY when it is perfect it will realign and click together like a lego set and the keys will slide in perfectly
You can and should test the vac before reassembling the whole body, simpley slide your hand under neath and activate the switch, with a bag inside the vac.
See now, wasn't that EASY???????
Please post back to advise how you make out. Its a 7 minute process worth $25 for a good tech. A bad tech will spend half a day trying to figure this one out but just go slow and follow the instructions and you will do fine.

Need new switch for Shopvac QSP Pro 10 gallon unit

I just went through the same problem with a Shop Vac. The switch is easy to replace but not easy to find. After removing the switch, I found a match made by Sigma Switches. They directed me to contact a local RV dealer and look in either their Coast Supply or Stag/Parkway Supply catalogs for the appropriate switch (an H2-28 in my case for a QPL45 Shop Vac). After ordering the switch and $5 later, it snaps in like the original with no problems. Certainly beats $70 for a whole new motor assembly.

Shop vac 90L400 stopped working won't start

I had the same problem with the same model. Turned out to be the thermal fuse on the motor housing, between the switch and the windings. Took it apart and replaced the melted solder with 14 guage copper wire. Works fine! No thermal protection but I don't use it for long at a time anyway. Check the switch for continuity, if good then check the thermal fuse for continuity. If good, it's the motor.
