Question about Computers & Internet

My presario cq50 210us shuts off after cleaning out fan and heatsink. I used your diagram to disassemble and it was very helpful but now I still can't run computer long enough to do any diagnostics. I had a piece of lint stuck in fan after blowing it out without disassembly. It worked for 2 weeks after just blowing fan out but started shutting off thats when I found lint clog. There is red color on copper where it touches processor is this burnt? What else can I do?

If you removed the heatsink you probably need to clean off the thermal paste and reapply before putting the heatsink back on. If the old thermal paste dried out (it generally does), it won't make good contact to remove the heat from the CPU and will over heat and shut off to protect itself.

Error fan showed up on screen when trying to reboot. Then shuts down. The 2 fans That I can see are both running.

More than likely its referring to the PROCESSOR fan, notice the fan on the heatsink the cools the processor,, Thats bad, or the heat sink needs cleaning.. Clean the heatsink first and if that fails replace the fan.

Hi, my HP Compaq Presario has been working great till the 5th of July when it shut down unexpectedly. I instantly turned it on again and shuts down again after booting up. I waited for about an hour, then...

Due to the heavy processing the PC heats up. Excessive heatup beyond usual is alarming and PC shuts down by itself when the processor/ CPU temperature exceeds the safe temperature limit. There are mainly two reasons for heatup.
Heating issue generally occurs due to fan failure, which may damage the system, if not checked and resolved properly. Another most likely cause of overheating is the dust present inside the PC, which clogs the fan and heatsink. As you have mentioned that the fan is not running, most probably the fan has gone dead or it may have stopped working due to clogging with dust and hence it needs cleaning or replacement. To do so, you need to purchase a new fan and disassemble the laptop to replace the fan.
To replace the fan, you have to disassemble the laptop and for that you need to have the laptop repair manual that can be downloaded here.
(I think that you have HP CQ60-419WM Laptop). The repair manual contains all the information as well as graphic illustration about disassembling and replacing the fan. Please refer to Page 4-41 for complete details.

If you are able to work inside such electronics and have some disassembling experience, you may try to do it yourself. However, if you have no experience, it is strongly recommended that you seek professional help from HP authorized repair/ service professional.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Toshiba Satellite L500D is shutting down by itself OVERHEATING Clean the fan with compress Air ....> NO GO Need help Please or Any other Suggestion

Disassemble the laptop and remove the heatsink.
Remove all the dried up heatsink goo that's on the heatsink and processor.
Squeeze a small amount of QuickSilver heatsink compound onto the middle of the processor top.
Place the heatsink on the processor and move it in a couple small circles before locking the processor heatsink back in place.
Clean the air vents and cooling fins well while the unit is open.
This should fix any overheating issues you are having (assuming the fan is OK)
If the fan isn't running, replace it.

Laptop overheating and shutting down prematurely

Laptop heatup is mainly due the clogged heat sink and fan etc, which requires to be cleaned. Laptop shuts dwon automatically when reaches the temperature limit to prevent damage. It is strongly recommended that you clean the heat sink etc yourself or seek help from authorized professional at the earliest to avoid any damages to the PC.
If you are familiar with working inside such electronics, then you can do it yourself after studying the following useful links about CQ-50 Disassembly. On the contrary, if you dont have sufficient experience/ idea about opening/ repairing laptops, DONT try it and get assistance from a professional,

My Compaq Presario CQ50-103NR Notebook PC keeps shutting down. Sometimes right away sometimes after a few minutes. The left side of laptop seems to get hot while the right side stays cool. Can You please...

Hi:
You most likely have a heat problem, as you have realized. To fix the problem, your heatsink/fan assembly needs cleaned, and then reinstalled with new heat sink compound. Some disassembly is required, so this isn't an easy job. If you go to a reputable shop, and tell them what you want them to do, rather than just tell them your laptop is shutting down, you should get it done for a fair price!

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX Notebook PC. For some reason it shuts down without warning. What can cause it to do that?

Overheating...

Your going to need to clean the fan/heatsink assembly..

On the cq60, this means complete disassembly of all parts and components...in order to get to the fan properly, the motherboard will need to be removed..

Remove All screws on the underside of Laptop, Remove Covers..(hard drive,RAM,Wifi).. Pull Out CDrom....Remove the 3 screws from cdrom area.....Flip Over.. Open Screen, Pull Media Strip (above Keyboard) Away from Laptop... Be carefull Here, There are Fragile ribbon cables attached to this on the left underside ..
Now Unscrew Keyboard Screws And Pull Keyboard away, THere's a ribbon cable here too attached to the motherboard,, Unlock the ribbon cable at the motherboard port(tab on each side pulls forward).. Remove Palmrest Screws.. Pull the Wifi Cables through the Motherboard upperside, Detach any plug/wires... Unscrew Screen Hinge Posts and pull screen away... Remove the 1 screw holding the rear strip of plastic---unsnap the plastic strip at back end of palmrest area... Pull palmrest away... Unscrew The Media Card Bay and the CDrom Port Board(left side)....
Remove the 2 motherboard screws on the bottom left side front...
Unplug the long cable port on the front underside of motherboard right in the middle....
Lift up the motherboard slightly.. pulling it up from the left rear side..... You will see the DC Jack Power Cable Right There Under The Motherboard... This Needs To Be Unplugged...--Pull The Motherboard Up About 2 inches and reach under to unplug the DC Jack Wire Port Plug...and the usb plug wire...

Now continue to remove motherboard
Flip Over And Remove Heatsink Fan Assembly... Unplug Fan... Disassemble Fan And Clean FAn And Heatsink Fins...

Shut down during use

If the CPU heatsink is not clogged with dust and lint completely, you can use canned air and just blow it inside the laptop through the openings on the bottom and on the sides. It’s nice as a precaution measure, but it might not work if your laptop already has a problem and the heatsink is completely clogged.

  1. Open the laptop case, so you can access the CPU fan and the heatsink. In some cases you can access the heatsink through the latch on the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes you have to open the laptop case all the way down.
  2. Carefully disconnect the fan cables on the system board and remove the fan. If the fan makes unusual sound when it spins (grinding sound), I would recommend to replace the fan.
  3. Clean the fan and the heatsink with compressed air.
  4. I would also recommend removing old thermal grease from the CPU and applying new grease for better heat conductivity.

Compaq Presario M2000 - Fan not running

It appears your CPU is overheating and is shutting down.
Does the fan spin at all when the laptop is switched on?
The fan could be faulty, if it does not spin freely.
To test the fan, try removing it and connect it to a 12 volt DC power supply, if the fan spins fast then it is OK and the fault is on the laptop, possibly the power supply to the fan. In this case you need professional help.
If the fan appears OK then the problem could be insufficient too old heat sink compound between the CPU and the heatsink. You will need to remove the fan and heatsink and the old compound and put some fresh heatsink compound on the CPU/heatsink and reassemble the fan/heatsink.

yes its probably the fan but it could also be the screen brightness. replacing the fan and turning down the brightness will cool the laptop. but i agree try a new fan first.
