Question about Computers & Internet

My laptop no longer recognizes the devices. I have had this external hard drive for over five years. There is a ton of information on it that i can not retrieve. I have even tried changing usb cables. I don't remember what i did with the disc it came with to try and reinstall it. There are two different numbers on the bottom of the device I am sending them to you. 183094000627 AAZ07320626 Thanks for the help.

Most likely the usb cad that the hard drive is in is no good but sometimes the drive is still OK... take it in to a computer shop and have them take it apart and plug the drive in themselves to see if the data is still there. a lot of times you can get what is called an enclosure to replace the one you have using the same hard drive.

When i connected my 250gb hitachi hard drive my laptop don't recognize it

Hello macklinalfre, Do the following to have the "External Hard Drive" recognized. "To install, and Update Hardware, click to open "Computer" from the "Desktop", check to see if there is a DVD-RW Drive (D :), for external different (E or F:).
I. Look in the "Device with Removable Storage area," see if the device is present, if so? Do the following: to "setup" the ('player') for "Installation."
II. Right click on (DVD) "Media Player" select ("Install") follow all instructions thereafter.
III. If the area is (Blank?), "go to," and 'click' on the "Start button" click all "Programs" scroll for a "Media Disk Player", open, and do the ("same as above") for the installation. *Note: "Do the same for "Setup" (above) "Install."
"I hope this information is helpful? Thanks for using FixYa, paul7of9"

Locked out, boot password

I recently had a similar problem. I could no longer access my external hard drive and was unable to take admin permission of the drive. I wanted to get my files off the drive before I formatted it, especially five years worth of photographs. The solution was simple. I downloaded and burned Ubuntu (Linux) onto a bootable cd and ran Linux on my computer. Linux doesnt recognize Windows Admin privalges. I was easily able to access my external harddrive and copy my files onto my desktop. I restarted my computer with Windows and re-formatted my hardrive. The last step was simply to cut and paste my files back into my external drive. Everything works perfectly after I formatted the drive and I was able to keep my files.

My SimpleTech 320GB external hard drive is no longer recognized

trying using it on another system and and see if it happens like that. if it does, you may want to get a driver for the hard drive. it is likely the driver is corrupted. try it on another port also.

Laptop Won't Recognize External HD

You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices).
Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.
