Question about Home

Open Question

I am the home owner. I had to replace a Wolverine Brass ceramic cartridge 53571 which had a broken piece (part of the "half-moon" 1/4 turn part. My plumber didn't know where to find the part, so I tracked it down through a local pluming supplier - Ratterman's Plumbing in Louisville, Ky. We installed the new part in the bath tub hot water faucet and turned on the outgoing valve from the water heater. With the faucet in the "off" position, the water flows out of the faucet almost at full force. My plumber is coming back this afternoon, but says he's not sure why this is happening.

SOURCE: Moen Bath Tub Faucet

Hi varn4620,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You had to replace the faucet in the tub due to a broken plastic piece in valve stem. Bought a Moen ripped the wall out and put new faucet in. Went good untill we turned the water on and the shower rained on us. Tightened everything you could find to tighten .Every time the water is turned on the shower rains. Can this be fixed or is the faucet broken?

Is this new faudet a single handle? If so I"ve had this experience also. Most of the time it's because the guts were not lined up properly at the factory. You may have to play with it a bit.
Turn off the water and take the handle off and remove the sleave, remove and rotate the guts. Try 90' at a time. Turn water on to try it. Useually one of the other 3 positions will be right. The correct position is there, but it may take time to find it.

Thank you,

SOURCE: Water is either hot or cold - no in between.

I found a way to get warm water in the shower, but I'm not sure it qualifies as a solution. After trying everything else I thought that maybe when I was feathering the faucet in the shower toward the cold side so I would get warm water that at a certain point it blocked the flow on the hot water side enough so that the sensor in the hot water heater sensed there was no demand in the line and it shut the water heater off. To test this, I went to the kitchen and turned the kitchen sink faucet all the way to the hot side and then turned it on so that I got a small flow of water. I waited for the water to get hot to be sure the hot water heater was working. Once it was hot, I left it running to keep demand in the line and then I went to the shower and turned the faucet on. When the water got hot I started feathering the control towards the cold side and soon I had warm water. So I think I'm right in that the sensor in the hot water heater was shutting the water heater off when the demand in the shower was lowered to a certain point when I was trying to adjust the water temp in the shower.

So now I can get warm water, but it means I have to leave the hot water running at another fixture in the house to create a false demand in the system so the hot water heater doesn't shut down. Is there a way to adjust the senor in the hot water heater so that it will stay on when I'm using the shower only, so I don't have to waste water by running another faucet when I want to take a shower?

SOURCE: water will not turn off

are the handle extensions on the cartridges all the way. i know sometimes the moens are a pain after you put the trim on to get them on and seated right so it actually spins the cartridge. also check the cartridge alignment the cartridges have little white tabs on the sides that correspond with a slot in the valve body if they aren't aligned it won't shut off either

The brass valve "stem" that the plastic

Although this grills is no longer available, Coleman may still support it. Try contacting their Customer Support Dept 800-835-3278, if you haven't already. From what the Owner's Manual shows, what you're needing is the entire burner valve assembly. As the brass stem is not a separate part.

I hope this helped and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Pump 635 impeller shaft is broken, can't find another, thanks

Here is a simple solution to your shaft impeller problem. First, you need to buy a brass (non-ferrous) round bar about 1/8 inch thick. Any other metal types WILL NOT WORK. Cut about 4 1/2 inches from the brass bar and verify it will fit in the impeller. If it does not, then you need to re-size it. The best way to do that is place it in a drill press and use a metal file (the reason for the 4 1/2 size). As the brass bar rotates, press the metal file against it until a desire size is reached. You may have to remove it from the drill press from time to time and see it will fit into the impeller. When the correct dimension is found, place it back in the drill press and use a medium grid emery cloth to smooth it down. Remove it from the drill press and cut it to the proper size (3 1/2 inches). Remember to round out both ends smooth before re-installing it back in the pump. Reassemble as normal and you are done!!! This should take about 30 minute to perform including installation. I did this to my Intex pump and it runs very smooth and have not problems with it.

Car will not start. steering wheel won't move. Lights do work. ignition won't turn on. car seems locked up. dodgemuncy@aol.com

The earlier Fords have a half moon shaped pot metal piece in the steering column that engages the ignition switch located just downstream from the keyed tumbler. When this piece breaks the key will turn, but it will turn easily with no resistance which you would normally feel as you turn the key. You would need to replace this piece to correct your problem. This requires removing the steering wheel to access the broken piece. This is a starting point. Hard to say without not being able to actually see your truck. Good luck. This half moon piece is prone to breakage.

You will need a Valve Cover gasket. Some gaskets come with those seals, and they do in fact call them Half-moon seals. .

I set cam and crank timing but no comp. No bent valves! Note, #1 piston no at tdc.at mark. Is one toth off.

I have run into this before . Volvo wants you to buy a special tool to properly set these cam's in time since the cam-drive pulleys are oil advanced . That's fine if you have up to $300.00 for the tool . I made 1 for under $20.00 . Here's How - Buy a 2in. by 7in. by 1/4in. piece of flat steel . 1 - Measure & mark 2in from each end (Length wise) . 2 - Measure & mark from the previous marks 3/4 in. towards center (Width Wise) . 3 - cut out space between marks (Finished product will look like a flat horse-shoe) . 4 - Put (flat horse-shoe) in a vise length wise (TABS UP) . 5 - bend each tab 1/8in.out from straight in line oposite directions (When done if you look straight down the lenght of the tool the tabs will make it apear the 1/4in piece of metal twice as thick)(1/2in.) 6 - Pull valve cover and look at the fire-wall side of the cam-shafts 1 side will be small half moon up(slots in cam will give the apearence of a small & large half moon) 1 small up and the other cam small half moon down . 7 - slightly turn the cams left or right to be able to fit tool in slots . 8 - With tool in place re-install cam-drive belt w/# 1 piston at TDC . 9 - adjust tensioner with very little tension against belt ( grab belt w/ tensioner tight above and below tensioner you should only be able to twist belt no more tha 1/2in. either way ) Bolt her down put her back together ( remove tool ) put valve cover back on & fire it up . GOOD LUCK!!! hope this helps you out .

I have removed the cartridge from my one-handled shower faucet with a removal tool from Home Depot. I think that the inside part of the cartridge came out leaving the outside of it still inside the pipe....

If you are talking about the black rubber sleeve that is around the outside of the cartridge, you will have to CAREFULLY work it out with a flat scredriver. Be careful not to dig into the brass housing of the rough-in valve. It may be a little painstaking, but this will work. I have also used a piece of copper pipe to work on that rubber piece. The copper pipe will not dig into the brass the way a screwdriver will. May want to try that first.

Ckeaner drags on carpet

This unit has the outer window, and a half moon window behind it. Check to make sure the 2 screws holding the half moon window are tight and that the plastic hasn't broken. The 2 windows at the bottom cener merge together, they may have come apart. Usually when one or the other window is out of place, it will cause a drag. You may have to replace the half moon window.
