Question about HP DVD1140i 22x Pata Multiformat Dvd Writer Burner

HP DVD writer 1140D doesn't recognize DVD's thinks drive is empty. Research on driver versions shows it's using Microsoft drivers. I would like to have the HP drivers to download that came with the DVD but the original software disc is missing.

All dvd writers have drivers on windows...and are installed automatically when windows is installed..If it started not to recognize dvd-es ...specially the ones burned in data format with multiple movies (avi ) ..even burned on it ...but sees the original ones..or sees the cd'es ..than the issue is with its lens ..and either you need a cleaning disk to clean it up ..or it is gone ...and need to be replaced..I personally have to do with something like this sand tried to update firmware ..installed original driver from the support site ,,and all the same ..Clean the lens and see how it is behaving ..and if it does the same ..just replace it ..cause they do have limited life time..otherwise you will end up with a lot of frustrations and no results...

It's not a problem of "device drivers", so don't bark up that (wrong) tree;
the software supplied by HP does _NOT_ include device-drivers.

Either:

1. the hardware has failed -- can it read any commercially-produced DVD disks?
If not, then replace the hardware.

2. there is software "inside" the device, called "firmware", that reads the volume-label
recorded onto the start of each "blank" disk. Either update the firmware, or
try a different brand of "blank" disks, because the current firmware is NOT accepting
as valid the volume-label on the current brand of disks. Newer firmware should recognize
the data on the volume-label.

    Most DVD drives are also CD drives, and it sounds like the DVD part is broken, you need to replace the DVD drive, this is done simply by buying a new one, I recommend Newegg.com ( if your unsure search exactly what you already have) then opening your case (tower) and just unplugging old one and plugging new one in, it really is very doable for even a novice.

    Chances are either your drive has gone bad, or you have a bad Malware on your system. Go to http://www.malwarebytes.org and get the free version. Install it, and update it, then run it. If it finds stuff, do what the prompts tell you to do, and that should fix the problem. If not, then get another dvd drive. You shouldn't need special drivers beyond what MS Windows has to make your drive work.
