Could be dozens of things. This usually happens when there is a crash (blue screen) during boot up. Did you recently do any upgrades? Is this Windows XP or Vista? Try starting in Safe Mode if you can. The possible fixes include doing a CHKDSK (check disk), rolling back to older drivers, or a repair install of the OS.

A CPU overheat will cause a system shutdown (to protect the CPU from damage), and it will be a sudden and ungraceful shutdown, the kind that makes Windows display that screen. Sounds like the heatsink and fan assembly may not be installed correctly: You need to have some specialized thermal grease between the CPU and heatsink, the heatsink needs to be the right type for the CPU, the fan needs to be spinning on the heatsink, and the tines should be free of dust. That means it's crashing during the boot process. Could be a corrupted file, or any number of things. If you can take the install disk and boot into Windows Recovery Console, you can run a CHKDSK and see if you can fix any errors on the disk.

Run CHKDSK C: /F at the recovery console to check disk and fix errors.

The only disc I have is a vaio recovery media kit I got from Sony will that work?

  • Phil

The Vaio recovery kit is great, but that will erase all of your software and set it back to factory settings. And, if you replaced the motherboard, the recovery disc won't work.

Also, tell me about the new motherboard - is it an exact factory replacement, or a 3rd party upgrade? Has the unit EVERY booted since the motherboard was replaced? Windows XP cannot just transfer between motherboards if you install a different type of motherboard, you need to reinstall. And you generally can't re-install from recovery CDs.

Can you tell me more details?

OK, if it is a factory replaced motherboard, you can use the recovery CDs, except that will erase everything on the hard drive!!

I don't know if the Sony repair disks let you do a repair install of the OS or not. There are a couple of things you can try, but depending on the underlying damage you might not be able to do much short of reinstalling.

There are repair things you can do, but it required burning CDs on another machine and doing a lot of stuff that can easily do more harm than good. Do you want to go that way?

Hp dx2200 computer won't power off

If your HP computer refuses to power down, this means that there are still programs open that Windows can't close. Normally when you select the "Shut Down" button from your "Start" menu, Windows closes all open programs, then closes itself, and your basic input/output system (BIOS) turns off all of your hardware. If Windows can't close all open programs, your computer won't be able to power off. This means that you must close these programs yourself.

Right-click on the window of an open program on your Windows taskbar (Bottom of Screen) Click "Close Window." Windows manually closes the program. If a window appears on-screen indicating that Windows cannot get the program to close, click the "Force Close" button in this window to have Windows force the program to shut down. Repeat "Step 1" for any additional programs that are open on your computer. Click "Start." Click "Shut Down." Hope this helps.

My XPS M2010 had a pop up when I went to turn it on today. I beleive that it never shut down. Pop up said program did not shut down properly do you want to find solution and close or close program. I chose...

There are two reason for this error message
1 Hardware failure
2 Software failure(OS)

To eliminate hardware failure run the hardware diagnostics on the computer.. Use the link

If all the hardware is working well then the issue is with the OS - reinstall it

Gateway laptop mx3414-black screen cannot load windows

Try going into safe mode upon startup by hitting the F8 button. If it does then hit safe mode to get into your computer. Go to start>accessories>system tools>system restore. Follow the wizard to restore your computer to a date earlier than when you started having problems. Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Compaq notebook won't boot up

When you boot the computer back up go into Safe Mode and check to see if you can roll the computer back to the point before you installed the software.

If so this should work. If it works then run a virus scan, a defrag of the hard drive and cleans the temp files.

You can do a diagnostic startup and uninstall Onecare. So once that it is uninstall ed it should be smooth sailing.

Here is a link for some startup / diagnostic software you could try after booting.

I hope this helps
