Question about Frigidaire 17 cu. ft. / 481 liter Upright Freezer FFU17FC5CW

1 Answer

I had a flood in the basement where I keep my Frigidaire freezer, model FFU17FC5W3, which left 4 inches of water on the ground. The following day I drained the basement and dried it up and the freezer was working. However, 3 days later it defrosted and now there is no cold air coming from the vents. I looked in the back and the compressor doesn't seem to be working. There is only the sound of a fan running and the compressor is cool to the touch (I expected it to be hot).

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Likely just the start device, the compressor is a sealed unit so the water would not have affected it.

Here's what I'd suggest you try...

If you feel like you can trouble shoot further I`ve provided the following info to assist you or you may decide to call a professional appliance technician as I would suggest.

I don`t know the age of your fridge, but I should mention...

** Most of the manufacturers of fridges have 5 to 10 years sealed system warranty which would include the compressor but not the electrical starting devices i.e., the overload & relay. Check your owners manual, it is the ultimate authority on warranty no matter what anyone else tells you according to.**

If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok.

**First, Unplug the fridge**

Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor.

On the side of the compressor will be the start relay/overload assembly such as this image...it may be enclosed in a black plastic cover as well.

Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle...

With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin.

You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms.

On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding=not good !

If following that, the readings are good, purchase a hard start kit. Part # HS410 also known as a 3in1 starterI had a flood in the basement where I keep my - 775ec2d.jpg>
i.e.

The above package contains info and hardware on how to connect it.

NOTE : the HS410 ( 3 in 1 ) should be considered just a temporary "fix" as opposed to an actual "repair" in should not be relied on for long term reliability or safety, but rather thefactory replacemnet, double check with your model number.

Hope that help`s move you forward if nothing else. If so please take a second and rate the reply and a testimony to your inquiry you received here at FixYa.

Thank you and good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Make sure everything is clean of debris and I would personally see if you could cool the area around the unit. Maybe use a fan or turn the air down in that room. Humidity and hot temps kill a unit's sealed system.

Things you can do to cut down on frost.
1.make sure all seals fit flush to frame.
2.use a thermometer and set freezer to -18c(beef will keep upto 12months).
3.wrap all food as airtight as poss.
3.do not overfill, leave space for air flow through drawers/shelves.
4.defrost every 2/3 months in humid conditions using clorine bleach to clean interior, and dry thoroughly.(leave door open to dissipate clorine gas.)

Basement flooded and chest freezer was down there. Any chance the freezer will work again or is it junk?

Yes it will work again. But I would not trust it. If you do want to use it you will want to let it dry out fre at least one week.

Water damage is hard to remove because it could have goten to the electrical parts: motor, compressor, timer, etc.. while it was still running. you need a volt meter to test these parts out no reset sorry

if it was running with water then toss it out...
sorry
call a service guy and he will tell you the same for $80!!! save your money
you can try to raise your freezwer off the ground when you get your new one...

hope this was helpful

Why would my Chest freezer be flooding my basement while it is still frozen inside

freezers still make condensation like air conditioners. they have a drain line heater to keep the condensate liquid until it exits the freezer. then it goes into a drain pain that usually has the high (hot) side line running through it to evaporate the water and at the same time increase efficiency. you probably have a rusted out drain pan which you can replace. you can make one from sheet metal and just seal the corners with RTV silicone, be careful sheet metal WILL cut you badly, so wear gloves whenever handling that stuff.

Frigidaire freezer not working

The thermostat may have shorted out so that it is no longer making contact to put power to the compressor. After drying out the components try bypassing the thermostat and see if it will start or make any sound whatsoever. If it does start and run with the thermostat bypassed replace the thermostat. 4-6 inches of water can also get to the relay on the compressor. Replacing the relay and over load assembly also be a good idea.

Freezer is constantly running and sides seem to be caving in on outside

Most likely there is a defect in the coolant system, you might want to get a repair man to help. What i think is happening is water is getting in the sides and when it expands/ contracts it causes the sides to cave in.
