Not sure what type of gas appliance you're having a problem with. If it's a vent-free gas heater, fireplace or gas log set, this problem is usually associated with a clogged Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS), which is a safety feature. In addition, based on the age of your unit and whether or not it has had regular annual maintenance, it could be the Thermocouple or Thermopile has failed. The latter can occur with both Vent-free and Vented Gas appliances.

If you will get back to me through the comment section of this page, with more specific details of what you have, I can help you further.

Pilot light is out on our only gas heater, it will not light back, checked the battery, breaker, etc. what can I do to fix it? its frigid in our home no source of heat

First and foremost be very careful !
Multiple attempts to light a pilot with no ignition could cause a gas build-up and then ignite with a WHOOSH !!
Have you shut off the gas and electricity completely and then turned them back on, then tried to light the pilot light?
When trying to light the pilot light, do you get a flame but it won't stay on?
Systems I have seen require you to hold a switch/knob open while lighting the pilot light, and continue to hold once lit until the thermocoupler heats up (this keeps the pilot light going once you release the switch/knob).
If you are not getting any flame, have you verified that your gas is getting to the heater?
You don't say what cause the pilot light to go out. . .
Post an update if nothing above has helped you.

The pilot light will only stay lit when you hold the pilot reset button in, as soon as you let the button out the pilot light goes out and the actual burners never come on. Any ideas?

Gas line is clogged if your pilot lite goes out - They got rid of pilot stoves because the pilot was always lit and using gas.

And without a lit pilot no way you can get the burner to ignite unless you use a match, assuming you have gas going to the burner!

Belling gas oven will only work when holding in ignition

The oven piot light heats a sensor which keeps the pilot light burning after releasing the button. The pilot light flame must be sensed by the sensor, the sensor must be in working condition. Replace the sensor or make necessary adjustments to make the pilot light flame burn on the sensor. The sensor is either a thermocouple or a generator. Thermocouple is standard, a generator needs to be properly matched with its type rated in millivolts, same rating for the replacement.

Need to light pilot light

You need to turn the knob on the gas valve (inside the heater) to the "pilot" position. Then, while holding a flame over the pilot assembly push down on the knob.

Gas should come out of the pilot and ignite. Continue holding the knob down for 10-15 seconds. Release the knob and the pilot should stay lit. If not the pilot generator may need to be replaced.

Turn the knob to the "on" position, close the heater and turn the heater on and turn the thermostat to hot. The heater should fire. If it does not fire and the pilot goes out, that may also indicate a pilot generator problem.

Pilot light willignite but fire wont light soon as you release pilot button gas goes out

There is a small copper probe that runs from the gas valve to the pilot assembly. This is called a Thermocouple or pilot safety. Remove it from both ends and take it to a good hardware store for a replacement. They come in sizes to fit most applications but it is OK to get a longer one, just coil up the extra. No gas will escape while you are removing the Thermocouple.

The pilot light will not stay lit to light the heater.

The power pile (pilot generator) is defective. It produces a milivolt signal to ensure to keep the gas valve open. If it goes bad, the valve thinks the pilot is out, even when you are holding the button down, so when you release the button, it shuts the gas off to prevent excess gas buildup and a possible explosion.

Pilot light won't stay lit.

Ensure that gas is getting to the pilot , or you may have a devective pressure regulator.
If gas is getting to pilot and pilot is turning off, then you need to replace the thermocouple.
The thermocouple function is to turn off the gas if there is not enough temperature, so to prevent gas leaks if the pilot light goes off.
Near to the pilot light there should a part similar to a small metal tube directly in contact with the flame. Thermocouple is wired back to the gas valve.
When the pilot is on, and temperature is steady, the thermocouple will generate a small voltage that will keep the gas safety valve open. In case the pilot light goes off, the thermocouple will cause the valve to close. When you hold the pilot light button , the thermocouple will normally reach enough temp to keep valve open.
If the termocouple is faulty, it will turn off as soon as you release the igniter button.
Replacing thermocouple is an easy repair.

Call the number listed on the owners documentation to get the replacement part.
