Question about Toshiba Satellite A40 Notebook
Assuming the problem is on a windows based system and not Linux...
Have you tried:
Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Audio Tab
Sound Playback tab: Double check that your system has the appropriate audio driver selected.
After you have selected the driver, click the volume tab to ensure nothing is muted that you don't desire to be muted.
- Repeat these steps for the Recording Playback and Midi Devices.
Friendly Note: if this just stopped working all of a sudden, you might have some Malware at work? Find the appropriate Malware and Spyware scrubbers and run them.
