Question about Fujitsu Desktop MPC3043AT 4.32 GB ATA-33 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have hard disk model MPC3043AT with capacity of 4 GB. The card (located exactly opposite in direction to 40 pin interface connection, with one end connected to PCB and other end is going down in disk section) is broken. Hard disk is not detected in Bios. Is that card/connector chip repairable and available in market? Thanks and regards

You can't repair it, but you can change it with an identical one. Find a similar hdd and look at PCB it's a serial, if it's identical you can swap them after you resolder ROM chip from the damaged PCB to the new one. But this method it's use for recovery data and could be expensive.

I have a USB key of 8 gig. Today i fill the capacity at 7.8 gig and ...wow.... the capacity is at 7.8 gig but nothing appear on it, even after check in 3 different PC !!! What the heck ?

Has to do with the definition of a GB. Here is a good explaination. from http://www.brettbits.com/Text/MissingHardDriveSpace/

The Answer

It turns out that the answer has to do with your electronic devices and their operating systems using a different definition of "gigabyte" ("GB") than that of the manufacturer's of storage devices such as memory cards and hard drives. When manufacturers of such devices say "GB", they mean what is called a "decimal gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bytes (a byte is a fairly basic unit of storage in computers). When your device's operating system describes the capacity of the storage medium, they typically use what is called a "binary gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes. Because of this discrepancy, a device has less binary gigabytes than decimal gigabytes.

It turns out that a decimal gigabyte is approximately 93% the size of a binary gigabyte, so if your hard drive is 40 decimal gigabytes, your operating system will report that it is approximately:

40 decimal gigabytes * 93% = 40 * 0.93 = 37.2 binary gigabytes

Which is exactly the hard disk capacity that is reported by operating systems such as Windows XP. Likewise, a 1 decimal terabyte hard drive is 1000 decimal gigabytes. Windows will report that hard disk's capacity as approximately:

1000 decimal gigabytes * 93% = 1000 * 0.93 = 930 binary gigabytes (this is very close to what Windows reports; however, the multiplication factor isn't exactly 0.93, as we'll see below)

So simply put, when you purchase a digital storage medium, you can expect your operating system to identify it as being about 93% the size that you expect it to be. You're not being ripped off; it's just that the word "gigabyte" is used to mean two different things.

Installing Hitachi Deskstar 40 GB drive as slave. Where do the connectors go. It says model IC35L060AVV207-0. Installing drive in Dell 4600

Look at the "connectors" end of the disk-drive.
There will be a set of thin pins for the "data" cable,
and thicker pins for the "power" connector,
and a smaller grid of small pins.
It's these pins that will be labelled/engraved on the casing:
MA(ster), SL(ave), C(able)S(elect).
Move the jumper to the "slave" setting.
Connect to the power connector.
Connect to a "data" cable.
When you add power to your computer, it should recognize the drive.

I want to upgrade my Fujitsu MHV2040AH 40 GB Hard Drive what is the biggest/fastes one i can replace with? i though i found another one but it doesnt have the right connectors. the fujitsu/toshiba site...

Your Fujitsu MHV2040AH is an IDE 2.5" 5400 rpm 40 GB hard drive.

Most Notebooks nowadays will use 2.5" SATA hard drive which is not compatible with IDE.
New IDE are getting harder to find and are therefore in general more expensive to buy than the equivalent SATA

You should be able to update the drive with most 2.5" HDD with either 5400rpm or 7200rpm (faster) with an IDE interface. Common 2.5 IDE capacity would be 120Gb and 250Gb (320GB and 500GB are also available but could be a bit expensive). The important factors are physical size to fit in your notebook/casing and IDE interface. The BIOS support for larger drive can also be a factor but as a rule, worst case situation, a larger capacity drive can always be used at a lower capacity

Hope it helps.

Yes, all IDE 2.5-inch disk-drives use the same pin-out. SATA-interface disk-drives have quite-different interfaces than IDE drives, but all SATA devices share a common interface.

I need to upgrade my internal hard drive, what exactly do I need to get the most storage for my Toshiba Notebook Satellite A135-S4666? I would like to have 500gb or more of storage.

There are two kinds of hard drives and you must learn which one your computer has. To do this, Turn the computer off, diconnect the power chord and remove the battery. Locate and remove your present hard drive.

If the connection end of the drive has two plastic covered connection locations, you have a SATA drive.

If the connection end has more than 40 pins, you have an IDE drive. There is no way you can confuse the two types.

Go to your favourite computer parts source (ebay, web store or real store) and buy the largest drive that they have and that you can afford. Install the drive and install your favourite Operating System.

The largest IDE drive is 320 GB and the largest SATA drives I've seen are 500 GB. Best of good computing with your new drive.

Hard drive replacement

SATA drives are the latest hard drives available nowadays. You could try going online and checking other sites that could still have an IDE hard available for sale.
