Computer just turns itself off when using but gives no indication that its trying to shut down.

Hello and thanks for using Fixya ...
This issue you described it can have several different causes...
first it can be a virus causing something and as a prevention the computer is turning itself down to avoid damages...and in this case you should be able to fix it by reinstalling the operation system from scratch ..using a bootable disk with the OS on ..and formatting the hard drive C partition during the installation to get rid of eventual bugs..
Ifr after this operation the computer is still doing the same ..it indicates that the cause it is of a physical damage or compatibility issue..
Chech the ram memory not to be damaged...and do this by uing the computer with only one module at the time ..and let it work untill it does the same or not...Keep the modules that do not cause the shut down ..and replace the others..
If the shuting down is actually a restart ..and it does it after showing the blue screen error ..than the cause is almost for sure the Ram memory units...and even if they are not damaged...the cause can be just a compatibility issue ..Check on the web for the specs of the motherboard...and see what they say about the Ram memory speed amd maximum value ..For example ..if your computer was build to use Ram memory up to 533 mhz or 667 ...and you use same DDr2 modules but the speed is up to 800 Mhz ..it is possibleto work a while and after that to start making problems on start up ..and shuting down suddenly with no warning ..and work fine if you restart it ..but ...making the same sympthoms after a while ..(usually the interval is smaller after it is warming up ..)
In this case you need to buy replacement and whith the exact specs like the ones in the manual..
Also do not use the maximum value supported..but for example if you have 2 slots suporting 1 G each ...use one with 1G and one with 512 M and it will work for sure..
another cause can be a CPU related ...if in BIOS settings it was by mistake or as a protection ..set a maximum allowed teperature...This will cause automatic shut down when the cpu gets to that temperature...The best way to avoid this ..is to get into BIOS ..and engage the optimal factory settings from the function key indicated by your Bios edition ..and after that use the F10 key to save the settings and exit..This will prevent the shut down if it is related with a strange setting made in bios..
If after all these the issue is still present ..the only thing that can be damaged is the motherboard...and it is probably something sensitive on temperature..and it works fine untill getting to the critical value..
This wil aply also to the power source ...If the fan is not working or it is dirty and do not do the job ...the power source can actually shut itself down as a protection when it gets to a certain temp.value..
have a nice day ...and I hope this will help ..

Turns itself off & gets hot -don't think fan is kicking on

Since you do not hear the fan anymore I would start by opening up the case and seeing if power is going to the fan and make sure any connectors for it have not come loose. If the connectors are still hooked up chances are the fan is shot and needs to be replaced.

If you are not familiar with working around electronics and parts under power I would highly suggest you have some one who is familiar with this do it.

My Philips Freevents sometimes wont turn on and when it does it shuts down without me shutting it down

If the computer shuts down with no warning then it could be your power supply is faulty, which explains it not turning on sometimes. Just check the back of the PC to make sure it is plugged in properly (TURN OFF ALL POWER TO THE PC BEFORE CHECKING). if this does not help, get it looked at by your local qualified computer technician if you don't know how to replace a power supply. Also, a connection to the motherboard to the Power button may have a fault somewhere, which also means take it in for a look if you don't know what to do. If it does give you warning with 'Windows is shutting down' it can be the following things.
1- Your power button on the PC is sticky and movement causes the computer to think you have pressed it and so it shuts down, which can also explain why it wont turn on all the time. Just use some household grease cutter and spray it on the outside of the button, turn off the power supply to th computer and press it in and out a few times to get it back to working order
2- A Virus is shutting your computer down on you, but this does not fully explain why it won't turn on but this could be an effect of the virus so use a virus checker to see if this is the case
3- Your computer system is getting too hot and usually a computer has setting which shuts it down before permanent damage happens. Check your PC fans to make sure they are running and feel around where your computer sits to see if its warm or hot and replace the fans or put your PC in a cooler environment

Hope This helps

Read disk error occured during rebooting

The acer recovery software sometimes has it's glitches. The CD might be fine, its just the data that wa written to the disk @ time of recovery creation was corrupt at some point.

If your machine shuts down randomly there can be only 3 possible solutions to this one:
  1. Your battery from your laptop has an issue. Try letting the laptop run on AC power ONLY.
  2. Your CPU is overheating, caused by a broken or unresponsive CPU heat sink fan, which causes your pc to shutdown (will always auto- shutdown at a certain temperature to prevent damage to the CPU. Check if you can feel "air" coming out of your laptop, suppose to be a hatched outlet at the side or at the back or on the top cover.
  3. You have a Virus that is shutting down the pc when it wants to. NO Operating system issue can cause your PC to shutdowb; only a virus can do that.
Summary, check your battery, check if your CPU fan is running, and make a virus scan (if the pc doesnt shut down). Remember to make a backup of your DATA, cause Acer (i dont think they will) don't do backups. Waranty on Acers is usually 3 years, depending on the country. So they should replace and repair, everything.

Virus

Do you have full functionality in safemode? If so, get your hands on an anti-virus and scan your system. You might also be able to use an online virus scan, but I'd avoid the internet if you know you have a virus.

If this won't work, you can try using a linux live CD to scan for viruses... although, I wouldn't recommend that unless you have Linux or Unix experience.

If none of these solutions work, most likely, you will end up taking it to a computer repair shop.
