I suggest you purchase an USB hard drive adapter case and install this hard drive into this adapter and use it as an external USB hard drive.
Connect this adapter case to a working computer's USB port and the computer will see this as an external storage device. You can then open the various folders and files to copy/backup etc.

Hi - The 2.5" laptop drive has an IDE interface, however it's different than a desktop IDE interface - it has 44 pins instead of 40 and is of a different size.

Reading your question makes me think you want to plug your old laptop drive into a desktop (not laptop) PC. If the desktop is of recent vintage (up to 3-4 years old) the machine will have SATA HD connections and you would need an adapter like this LINK.

However if you have an older desktop it would have IDE connectors and you would need an adapter as shown HERE.

If you're talking about installing your old drive into a new LAPTOP tha's a bit of a problem because laptops don't use cables. Laptop hard drives plug directly into the HD bus on the system board.
Also, any newer laptop would be using SATA and there is no way I know to plug an IDE laptop drive into a laptop using a SATA connector. You'd be forced into using an external (USB) hard drive enclosure to reuse your old drive.

Now that wasn't so confusing right 8^)

Hi, own a Sony Vaio VGN P530H with hardisk Toshiba MK6028GAL damaged. as forced to replace unit, wonder could install a higher capacity? Brand & model if available please!!! thanks to all of you!!!

The VAIO VGN-T350 is a notebook computer designed and distributed by Sony.
The hard drive on your Sony VAIO VGN-T350, which is the unit that stores data, consists of many clusters of data that can be rewritten with new data.
If you are looking for a memory capacity upgrade, or if your old hard drive is having errors, it's time for an upgrade.
Upgrading the hard drive on your Sony VAIO will require the use of a screwdriver and will take you about 30 minutes to complete.

Turn off your Sony VAIO VGN-T350 and remove the power cord and any other peripheral components.
Turn over your Sony VAIO VGN-T350 and locate the hard drive chamber on the bottom of your laptop. It will be clearly labeled.

Use the screwdriver to remove the screw holding the lid in place.
Gently lift the hard drive and its cage away from your laptop and disconnect the data cord.
Remove the four screws located at the corners, and then remove your old hard drive from its cage.
Place your new internal laptop hard drive into the cage and replace the screws.
Connect the data cord to your new hard drive and place your new hard drive into its chamber.
Close the lid and replace the screw to complete the operation.

This might not be your specific laptop it might give you an insight into the hard drive installation.

Ebay this hard drive should fit there are smaller capacity drives that will be compatible.

I have a Sony VAIO GRZ610, old i know. Won't power up,

If you cannot get the laptop working then try this method.
Remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If this computer sees this as an USB mass storage device (external hard drive) and you can open the various folders and files, then you can backup and or transfer your data to another computer. If yiu install the hard drive in an USB hard drive case then you can use this hard drive as an external USB hard drive.

I have the same problem. I am having a sony vaio vgn-nr120e and my hard drive crashed. Please let me know the exact hdd to replace my sony vaio hdd. I am a novice in computers. I find somethings so...

I've replaced my Sony Vaio VGN_160 with a 120gb Seagate Momentus 7200rpm, 16mb cache 2.5" Sata drive. I would think all notebook SATA drives should be compatible. The 7200rpm drives cost the same as the 5400 and it only uses something like 5% more power. (I read that in a forum so I can really say if it's true.)
I did notice a performance boost from the faster and higher cache drive. It was enough to get my 4 year old Vaio another 12-18 months of life before I get a newer one. And you CAN install Windows 7 (x86 since my Vaio is a core duo and not 64bit compatible.) Yours should be able to take Win7 64, unless of course you like Vista.

Once you remove the stock drive from the drive cage, it's a matter of putting the new drive into the cage and then reinserting.
I would suggest you format the new drive before you replace it. I had the Vaio back together without formatting, and Win7 install DVD was not able to find the drive until I formatted it on my desktop. The Sata and power connector are standard so it was easy to do.

I have a sony vaio vgnsz330p. I want to be able to get data.

Take the hard drive out and go to the computer retailer and ask for a EIDE/SATA to usb adapter. You can then plug the hard drive into this adapter and then plug the usb cable into another computer...the computer will read the drive as an external and you can access all your files like any other drive.

I need to preform a system reboot/ restore for aSONY VAIOPCGGR250

Hi,

Holding zero is the method for restoring Toshiba computers. Sony Vaio should use F10. From there you can do a full system restore to factory defaults.

Hope that helps :)

Power issue

Sony has a terrific website for support. I just bought a PCG-F610 and found everything I needed on the Sony website.

There seems to be a different model number for your unit on the Sony site. Go here:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-find.pl?mdl=pcg-7h1l+ and go through it step by step.

I love my new (old) Sony Vaio by the way. I got it on shopgoodwill.com. Goodwill doesn't put all of their stuff out locally. Some of it is held for auction and the site is shopgoodwill.com. I got the laptop for $132. Sure, it's a little older but I love it! Picked up a nice Toshiba Satellite for a song!!

Sony Pcv-w 600G hard drive replacement.

Replacing a hard drive is very simple. A hard drive will have two connectors a one for power(small plug usually white with 4 holes ), and an IDE cable that looks like a ribbon. You just have to remove the cables from the old hard drive and plug them into the new one.
An IDE cable looks like this(clcik here)
You see the four holes next to the IDE cable? Thats where the power connector is plugged in. Let me know if you need anything else.
Good luck!
Sai.

Computer Crashed!!!

Format it and start again,
hope you saved your important stuff ,
if not take your drive out and plug into another machine ,
now using the other machine to sort out your stuff for saving,
Save and then format the drive thru device manager .
Select the Drive from your computer while your in Device Manager.
Right click on your Drive (drop down appears)
A Quick format seems to take a short period off time.approx 10min(depends on hard drives size)and its ready for use straight away.
Plug it back into your original computer and it should be happy as again.lol
Hope this helps, let me know out come thanks

Hard drive

I would at this point not attempt to boot to that harddrive. replace the harddrive and after you have the operating system installed you can slave that harddrive in and copy the data (maybe)
when you reconnect the harddrive go for the documents you want the most first
