Question about HP Pavilion dv5-1000us Notebook PC

1 Answer

I had to replace the motherboard on my HP DV5 1140us laptop. As soon as I replaced it, I tried to power it up. It wouldnt power on, but by where the power adapter goes, it's a constant blinking light which stands for insufficient power. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Try operating the unit without the battery.
If it works, the battery is probably shorted, and may have caused the subsequent failure of your previous motherboard.
If that doesn't help, post a reply here and I'll see what else might be the issue.

My hp netbook wont turn on, what shoud i do?..

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:
Possible causes:

1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
1. Test the AC adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

2.It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

Hardware failure: the chipset of the motherboard has overheated and failed. You will need to take it to a repair shop, you will probably gonna have to replace the motherboard.

The motherboard may be bad. Make sure the harddrive is securely connected. Reseat the RAM boards. Verify you are getting DC voltage out of the adapter tip by measuring it with a volt meter for around 19 Volts DC. If it's good, then check the power jack and verify you get a blue light around the jack when you plug the adapter. If you verified you're getting power successfully and still doesn't come on then the motherboard is bad.

As others have said, the most common fault with the ZV series is the power socket. However, you mentioned the Lightning Bolt. This indicates that the battery is being charged and it should go out as soon as the battery is fully charged.

If the Lightning Bolt flashes on and off regularly, especially when the power cable is moved, then the socket is at fault and needs replacing.

You can check to see if the battery is receiving a charge by doing the following

1. Right Click the Desktop
2. Click Properties
3. Click the Screen Saver tab
4. Click the Power button
5. Click the Power Meter tab

This will tell you the computer's current power source and whether the battery is charging.

I have replaced several of these sockets on ZV5000s and I'm sure the 6000 will be similar. I would not recommend this job for anyone without technical knowledge, despite some of the websites that say you can do it yourself. You will need to strip the entire laptop down and all but remove the motherboard before the socket can be replaced.

Hope this helps

Some laptops will not power up with a completely discharged or faulty battery. Remove the battery from the laptop, plug in the power cord and try to boot the system. If the system boots, your battery needs to be replaced. Replace your battery as soon as you can, it's not a good idea to run the laptop for extended periods with an open battery bay.
