You will need to go into your aspect ratio and change the settings(resolution). You probably have your settings set at 4:3

HALF OF THE SCREEN

Are you referring to the black bars that show above and below the movie? That's normal, it's called widescreen aspect ratio.

If you don't like that, you want to buy/rent fullscreen movies.

Widescreen is 6:9, fullscreen is 4:3. (Square versus rectangle)

Kworld pc to TV - avi does not show on TV screen

This turned out to be due to weirdness in my laptop's onboard graphics card. If I set the external monitor to display the way an external monitor usually does, as a clone of the laptop screen, the videos show up blank. But if I set it as dual-screen (extend my desktop to this monitor) and drag the video app onto the second monitor, it works fine.

I can not get "fullscreen" on tv via laptop--when i click the "fullscreen " icon in laptop toolbar it freezes tv rather than going full screen

You should search for how to get "overscan" on your laptop model. ... I have a mac mini plugged into an LCD tv and in order to get it fullscreen i had to enable overscan.

Unable to view fullscreen in hdtv

That is the way HDTV is viewed on many screens as a wide fromat. So you will get top and bottom non-viewable areas. It is the width that gives the full imagery for that format. To have the screen filled you would get a standard 4:3 format like standard TV. HD is a 16:9 format so it is much wider.

If it says that your system can not run it in fullscreen mode, then it certainly can not be ran in fullscreen mode.
