The 2 most likely causes for this are either that your printer is starting to run low on black ink (a good way to tell if this might be the case is if the colors are printing with visible lines/streaks in the color)

it is also possible your cartridge heads are dirty and need to be cleaned. Your printer software should have an option for this and you should clean them regularly and calibrate them as well.

You should also make sure your drivers are the correct ones and up to date. You should be able to find this info on the manufacturers website.

I have a HL4040CN copier. When the message comes up that ink is low, how can I tell what color ink cartridge needs replacing

You're just going to have to keep printing until you see which cartridge is getting dry. It'll be either the black one or the colour one. This way you won't buy the wrong cartridge. If you print black text and it starts to come out grey then it's the black cartridge that needs to be replaced. The same with colour, if the picture looks faded then you'll need a new colour cartridge.

I can't print in grayscale with my colour cartridges

The black ink cartridge is used to print in grey scale mode.

It is therefore not possible to print in grey scale using only colour ink cartridge.

Printer is printing the black color as light grey. Toner is already exchanged.

When you print something from a website and the print box comes up, click on preferences tab, and when it comes up click on color . Then click on print in grayscale and change the setting from High Quality to Black ink only, click apply at the bottom, then OK. It should print in black ink.

Print colour is wrong.

When you go to print, select printer properties and select black and white printing, not gray scale photo printing. If this doesn't help, try cleaning the black cartridge or replacing it. Hope this helps!

Black colour ?

Thats because it's using the other colours to mix what it thinks to be shades of grey. Due to the black ink being pigment based and the colours inks dye base, when printing onto glossy paper the machine will use the colour dye based inks to make up black.
If you were to print on plain paper, set to greyscale, then the machine will just use the black as the pigment ink sits onto of the plain paper and will not run should the paper get wet.  With glossy paper the ink has to be absorbed into the paper ad the Black pigment ink will not do this so the machine will use the coloured inks.

Sucks but true.

Grey & Black Printing on everything

Hi,
it appears that the printhead has a problem. try cleaning the printhead, via software. usually in printer prefs. also try running a few test pages. to see if you have any colours at all. if it,s only printing in grey scale. i.e grey-black. check the colour cartridges ink has,nt run out or blocked the nozzles.
Hope this helps Mike@Compurepair.
