How can I tell if I have a blown head gasket on my 1999 Hyundai Tiburon

Do you have a decrease in power? Do you have water in oil? Do you have a increase in fuel and or oil usage. How much condensation comes from your exhaust. What type of car is it. Your local AutoZone can be very helpful in diagnosing this problem

Hi Wendy, hope I am wrong but it sounds like a cracked head or blown head gasket.
If the engine hasn't been started in a couple hours pull the engine oil dipstick and look at the oil level. If the oil level is over the full mark you likely have water in the bottom of the oil pan. Milky/semi-white oil on the dipstick would indicate the same. If the oil looks good and at or below the full level look in the water overflow for the radiator. Any sign of oil or milky looking foam is an indication of oil in the water from cracked head/block or blown head gasket. If both the water and oil look good start the engine, let it warm up and look to see if you have water coming out of the exhaust pipe. It is normal to see some water come out of the exhaust after starting a cold engine due to condensation in the muffler and catalytic converter but a healthy engine should have only a slight amount of water vapor coming out of the exhaust. Anything more would indicate a cracked head/block or blown head gasket.

What causes Kohler 20 HP engine to smoke off exhaust after start up?

Have you tried pulling the hood off cleaning any oil contamination off the suspected area then start it and watch while it's clean. It seems weird that a valve cover gasket would be the failure after two repair shops looked at it. You may need to look close at the head gasket could possibly being blown forward. I know you said it leaks so I'm assuming there is nothing actually coming from within the motor being blown through the muffler I have seen these motors burn oil heavy on startup than clean up after warm.

It was over heating sputtering running rich

It's difficult to answer from your brief description but it could be a blown head gasket, bad radiator, stuck thermostat, or the cooling system may be air locked. The oxygen sensor could be causing it to run rich.

Before digging into a head gasket do a few more things....

Does the Cooling fan(s) come on? No, check relays? If it has 2 fans turn A/C on, one should come on.

Check engine oil, is it over full and milky looking? Indicates Blown Head Gasket

Open Coolant over flow bottle is it bubbling if so does it smell like exhaust fumes? Indicates Blown Head Gasket

Temp gauge shot up to max, grey smoke out of exhaust, never boiled up,car tried to run but lumpy, now no water in rad but oil is normal, filler bottle cap wont screw back on,, peugeot 405

sounds like blown head gasket (through exhaust port) fill with water and start up, look under car, and see if water is coming out of the exhaust pipe)note: if head gasket is blown thru exhaust port you won't have water in the oil. it will come out of the exhaust. if this is the case then possibly can fix with (k&w block sealer or comparable block sealer) since no water in oil engine should be fine.) but follow directions to a T on block sealer if you don't it could stop up the radiator and you'd be back in the same position. also make sure you fix problem that caused it, probably bad thermostat or water pump.

Water coming out of exhaust

sorry but in most cases when water is coming from the exhaust it is one of two things. Either the head gasket is blown or the head itself is cracked. Check the oil dip stick and if the oil is a light milky brown color which would indicate also a blown gasket or cracked head.. Hope this helps and good luck.

When running tractor has white smoke coming out of exhaust and it smells like fuel. the owner before me just put a new head on it. don't really know why but he did. the carburetor was also just rebuilt.

White smoke out the exhaust is a sign of water burning or getting into the exhaust system and steaming out. It is possible he got the head gasket on wrong or it has blown another head gasket. I would run a compression test on each cylinder. You can get a screw in compression tester at my auto parts stores that will screw into the spark plug hole. It will come with instructions also.

I know this doesn't fix your problem but it will help you get started in isolating it.

Excessive smoke when runing oil in exhaust

Sounds like it could be a blown head gasket betwen the cylinder and valves. The gasket is very thin in that area and is a common problem. Not a recommended fix for a novice. Best taken to a shop..... Dwain
