Question about Linksys WRT120N Router

1 Answer

I have a Cisco WRT120N wireless router. The wireless internet access goes away when I turn off my laptop. When I turn the laptop back on, no more access. The only way to get it back is to pull the router's power cord, wait ten seconds and plug it back in. Very inconvenient, to say the least. Is there a fix? I already downloaded the firmware upgrade.

Have you tried the laptop on another wireless network? It should release and renew it automatically when you reboot the laptop without having to reset the router. And it sounds like the router itself is glitzed. But i would try using the laptop wireless on another router somewhere and also try connecting some other wireless device to the router to analyze the problem. You could also try setting the laptop's ip to a fixed ip number instead of obtain automatically (it must be in the same range as the router - first three numbers needs to be same as the router's) and see if it's the dhcp that is the problem.

A few years ago there were a lot of glitzy linksys routers ...

Press and hold the pinhole RESET button at the back of the router with the power ON for 20 secs. then release the RESET button.
To connect to your wireless router. the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops-computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops-desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.

What is the default username and password for a Linksys/Cisco Wireless -N Home Router to access web-based setup

Connect to http://192.168.1.1/
The default password is "admin". No username required. If you don't remember the correct password and you don't want to use some brute-force cracking software the only option is to reset the router pressing reset for 30 seconds. After that everything should be back to factory defaults including the default password.

I can't connect to the internet w/ my new laptop. I can't find my security key to hook up.

This article documents a known issue with resetting a Linksys WRT120N to its factory default settings.

Symptom: Holding down the reset button on the back of the router does not reset the settings.

1) Download the latest firmware from Linksys (link below).

http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT120N

2) Unplug the router, hold the reset button, and plug in the router while still holding the reset button.

3) Open Internet Explorer, go to http://192.168.1.1

4) Use the "Browse" button to locate the firmware file downloaded from Linksys.

5) Once the update is complete, unplug the router and plug it back in.

6) Hold the reset button on the back of the router for about 30 seconds, a light will indicate when it resets.

7) Allow the router to reset for 1-2 minutes.

8) Open Internet Explorer, go to http://192.168.1.1

9) Enter "admin" for the username and "admin" for the password (without quotes).

Your router should now be reset to the factory defaults!

I'm confident that having both routers distributing the same subnet is causing a conflict.
You should change the Cisco router to 192.168.2.1. and let it deliver IP addresses by DHCP.

That should do the trick.

open internet explorer and at the top type "192.168.1.1" that should bring you to the log in page. clarkcanhelp_3.jpg

if you never changed it, try user-admin and password-blank. if that doesn't work try admin-admin, admin-password.
when you get in click on the wireless tab and make sure its on/enabled.
then go to security tab and make sure you lock out others from accessing your internet. clarkcanhelp_0.png

If the firmware is already updated and you reset and reconfigure the router then the same issue occurs then it is time for you to return it or change the model of your router.
