Question about Stanley Factory Reconditioned Bostitch U/RN46 1 1 3/4" Coil Roofing Nailer

1 Answer

Our Bostitch RN46 coil nailer was bought new last July and has only put on around five squares of shingles. We used it today for the first time since last summer and at first it was mis-firing, only shooting a nail every other time the trigger was depressed. We sprayed WD-40 on the head and nail feed area. After a while it started to work normally. Then a new problem developed, the driver would not retract and had to be pushed in by hand. What is supposed to retract it, a spring or air pressure? What can we do to fix it? Thank you, Paul

Going strickly by what you said above, it sounds like you put it away 'dry'. If you are not going to use a nail gun for an extended period of time you should lube it well with pneumatic gun oil and fire a couple nails to distribute it throughout the gun. When you take it out of storage, put a little more pneumatic gun oil in it and fire some nails to get it well lubed again and blow out any excess oil. WD-40 is OK on the exterior of the gun as long as you blow off any excess after spraying it on; never use it inside the gun. The problems you are experiencing now are indicative of broken or damaged o-rings inside the head. Some of the o-rings act as seals and some act as valves. There is also a rubber bumper at the bottom of the cylinder. When the driver hits the bumper it is pushed back up by the rebound off the bumper and assisted by air pressure. If one or more of the o-rings are damaged the air isn't directed to the proper place to make these things happen. Bostitch makes a rebuild kit for your gun. It's part number RN-46RK. You can find them on several on-line after market sites and should cost around $30 to $35. Use all of the parts in the kit and you'll have a gun as good as new.

How can I stop a RN46-1 from jamming

We often see jamming with stainless wire collation - the problem is almost never the gun, it is because the stainless wire is much harder to shear off than regular steel. I would suggest trying another brand of nail and see if that helps.
Also, yes, the trigger is all that is required to change it to sequential, it is a very easy swap.

New recon. wont fire this morning. Used it first time yesterday and it worked fine. Now, I can hear air when I press the tip onto shingles but no nail?

I would return it for an exchange, sounds like the firing valve is sticking or you might want to check for a jammed nail in the nose area. UNPLUG from air hose first.

After 15 or 16 coils, it would not fire. took top

Look on ebay for rebuild kit # RN46-RK , this kit has all the parts needed to restore to like new. The kit is easy to install and should last for many jobs to come. Be sure to oil the nailer once or twice a day with a few drops or bostitch oil or any nailer oil. It is sold a Lowes for about $3. Good luck

I have a bostitch ridge runner that leaks air badly out of the trigger and wondering how to take out the plastic trigger in the gun. Also what would be the cause of the air leak

The air leak can be one of a few things. FIrst make sure that you have added some pneumatic oil to the air stream. This will lubricate the o-rings and make a tight seal. If that fails to resolve it, repalce the o-rings. (kits available for around $20). Next, woul dbe the trigger assembly itself. These triggers wear over time and are easily replaced.

See the website below for parts and a good diagram of the construction of the gun. You should be able to replace the parts by following the diagrams.

Please note that the exactmodel number is required to get hte correct diagram.

Hope this helps,
Dan

My bostitch rn46 seems to double or triple shoot nails frequently. Am I not using the tool properly or could there be a mechanical problem with the tool?

if u are right nails for gun, then make sure when u put coil in and feed in front of firing pin the nails are straight with pin and connecting wires are not bent causing nails to fall out of alingnment.
