there is a label on the unit that has the model & serial numbers & date of manufacture. If you cannot locate it, you might try removing the cover & look inside for any indication of dates.

Bt-15k2 wont power up

You probably got a defective unit. Look at the manufacture date. If after rev072010 you're ok. Look bottom by the scan bar code for the date.

How do tell how old the unit is

You will need to look at the serial number of the unit. There may also be a date code on the unit itself. If there is not a date code, then the serial number will contain the year of manufacture. Its typically within the first 4 letters or numbers of the serial number. Look for any numbers that resemble a year that may suit the age of the unit. If you cannot determine age, gather the model/serial and call a local parts house and ask for the year of manufacture. They should have no problems attaining that information for you.

That is a 5ton condensing unit.(12k btu per ton).If the manufacture date is'nt on the outside of unit,you should be able to find it as well as serial ect.....On the inside of the service panel.

yes we need the serial number...

it should look like 1 letter and 9 numbers: L983289765

The 4 numbers after the letter tell you the year and week of manufacture:

EXAMPLE: L983289765 32nd week of 1998 manufacture date

Look at the compressor for a date code. Some compressor manufacturers have the date code as part of the serial number. First two digits are for the year and followed a letter for the month of manufacture.
