I have a Gateway 500 series. The PC will start to boot up, get to the "Gateway" page then stop. The harddrive will not go into Windows XP. It will allow me to go to the bootup page and it does show the the harddrive is being seen. Can you please give me some idea's on what to look at. Thank You for your time, Joe

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

I can't get my laptop to boot up.

It sounds like your Explorer.exe is corrupted or missing. when you see your desktop wallpaper then you can try to open task manager my pressing Ctrl+Altr+Delete keys all at a time and now click "new task" and type Explorer.exe and press enter. if your Explorer is OK then your icon and other thing should land up if not then restart computer and try to open computer in safe mood by pressing F8, if you can open then try restoring your computer to earlier date by going to start----program---accessories----system tools -----system restore.

Gateway dx300 hard drive

Gateway DX300 Desktop PC is a series.

Could be a Gateway DX300MC, or DX300QS, or DX300S, or DX300X,

http://support.gateway.com/support/supinfo/index.asp?pg=2&file=DX300series.html

Fortunately all models in the series use a SATA harddrive.

[ Gateway DX300X Desktop PC used as an example,

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/DX300/1008555/1008555nv.shtml

In the list click on - Components
On this page scroll down to the bold subheading - Harddrives

All models came with a Western Digital harddrive, but it doesn't matter what the harddrive manufacturer is, that you use ]

What size in GB amount? Depends on what you want. I myself wouldn't go more than 320GB.
That is because your anti-virus program has to sift through the harddrive.

The larger the harddrive, the longer it takes.

For more capacity, I would install a 1TB harddrive into an external enclosure, and use it connected to the computer, with it's USB cable.
(It will also come with an additional external power supply)

But that is just me.

Bear in mind that a new harddrive has no Operating System on it.
You have to purchase a genuine copy of Windows, and install it.
(This is if your harddrive presently on that Gateway is bad)

[ Microsoft makes one Master disk. From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer ]

Windows XP did not start successfully. The screen gives me five opitions. Safe mode, safe mode w/networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configburation and start windows normally. All...

There are several methods to get a non-booting PC to work again. Because you don't have an XP disc I'd suggest select the option that says "Don't restart on boot failure" or something along those lines. Then when it goes to a blue screen, use this website to help you further diagnose the problem: http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

Fujitsu Amilo Pro V2055. Starts boot, performs RAM check, etc. then displays "cant find operating system". Checked that HDD is ok by reading it using another computer. Tried hard disk utility...

This usually means 1 of a few things..
1. Your Harddrive is bad
2. You got a boot sector virus, and your boot ini file is so badly infected, your computer can't find the boot file and you need to format your c:\ or d:\ drive....if you can get to your CMD window (command) but the way you bring it up is from CMD in start/run/CMD but since you can't even boot to your desktop...then you can choose a few options..

IF you have your your Windows Xp, or Windows Vista or Window 7 (depending on how you purchased your system, I'm thinking XP...since with Vista and Windows 7 you can reload to factory settings)

If you do have the disk....then you WILL have to reload your Operating System ....IF your harddrive isn't bad (have bad sectors or clusters) or is just "old" or was bumped severely and there's a dent on your harddrive preventing your boot ini file from being found...

There are so many things that could be wrong with it....Send me more infomation....
It's definitely NOT your motherboard...it's a harddrive issue...whether from a virus (which there are many out there that could infect or even rename your boot file....or your harddrive is BAD..
Either way...let me know and I can help you further!!!

I want to have xp on my vista gateway laptop

Hello, Its really hard to downgrade from vista to XP on dell laptops. vista and XP use completely different drivers and dell has stopped writing drivers for XP. But still you can downgrade. You need to setup external SATA harddrive from where your XP CD should boot as it wont boot from your current harddrive that has vista. Even if you set these up and downgrade, Since dell has stopped writing drivers your new XP will not work with many new softwares and applications as you wont have drivers for them. I would advice you to use Vista. Good luck, Please rate the solution. ~regards, Jegan

Operating system & harddrive not found

Did you remember to enter the BIOS setup and change the boot drive so the system would look to the (optical) drive in which you have put your XP disk? In most cases, you must tell the system where to look for boot files and with a new hard drive, there are no files to find.

If you don't have any malware defense installed yet, and can again get it up and running enough to go on line, I would recommend all of the following:
- AVG Free Grisoft Home Page - Spybot S&D Spybot Home page - AdAware Lavasoft Home Page
Basic versions are either free or ask for donations.

hey you need to boot from a windows disk and select repair this will solve your problem. I'm assuming the start up disk is a OEM of windows if not borrow one from a friend .. follow the steps HERE
Its for windows xp but its the same process for vista and other versions of windows as well!!!

That will solve your problem and next time Dont Compress the WINDOWS folder located on your harddrive ok :)

Restored computer harddrive and when windows XP starts setup freezes when finding devices

how long did you let it sit? It can sit and appear to be frozen for up to five minutes thanks to network searching.

If this doesn't work, boot into safe mode and see if you can at least do that.
