Glad to HELP YOU!

As long as you didn't specified the BRAND/MODEL of your GPS Navigation Device I will tell you what to do in a general way.

So, to update the MAP(S) and the SOFTWARE you have to go on the manufacturer's web site and you have to input your MODEL of your GPS and the NUMBER (usually such parameters do have to be input on the right side of the SUPPORT page) and to choose UPDATE.
See if there are any updates and download the file(s) on your computer. After that connect your GPS device to your computer via USB cable and double-click on the update file(s) you have downloaded from the manufacturer's web site. Follow the instructions that will appear and you are done!

GOOD LUCK!
My best wishes!

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I bought an garmin nuvi 200 in the States; now I am in Toronto, Canada but my gps does not work here in Canada; do I need to buy an update?

Hello,

You would have to purchase the Canadian mapping for that unit as it only has an American database so an update would help. For the price i would recommend getting a whole new unit instead of purchasing the Canadian mapping. 55 dollars would get you the Mapping 99 would get you a unit with both USA & CAN maps that would be up to date with Traffic capabilities. Here is a link to the product I would recommend for you.

Hope this helps!

The date that my Nuvi operates on is incorrect

Nuvi 200 - trying to reset the date using the method suggested by Kevin A (and in a cellar) and after two hours the Nuvi was still "locating satellites". Am I doing something wrong?!

My main problem, however, is that having loaded a copy of the latest European maps onto the card used in the device, when going through the "where to" routine I am asked to enter State/Province. Living in the UK this is a little difficult as there is no answer I can give that the unit will recognise! Any ideas?

Our state agency purchased 300 Nuvis for our police cars. I am the training officer and am being asked what benefit otaining the $70 upgrade would be. Is this urgent? Is is needed? Could we get a free...

It depends on how long you have had them.

I have heard that a buyer is entitled to a free upgrade if the unit is new and the upgrade is requested within a certain amount of time.

Apparently there the firmware in the unit records when the unit first obtains a satellite lock and that date is is used to determine how long the unit has been in operation. I'd check into it right away.

The problem is you have so many units and it takes about an hour to upgrade each one. So, its not going to be a quick process.

You need to see what map is already on the unit by selecting the tool icon, then system, then maps and then "map info".

The 2010 maps are already out. Newer maps means you unit is more up-to-date with current roads that have been added.

No it is not urgent but if you can get it for free, then you may wish to consider it.

Unable to use spelling option

Option 1: Use the reset button under the antenna.
Option 2: with the nuvi on, press and hold the upper right corner of the touchscreen until a message pops up about erasing all user data, tap yes, it will roll back to factory state. Now connect it to the usb port, of the computer, go to the garmin site and download and install webupdater and let is check if the machine is up to date software wise. let it install the required updates. When finished, power down, power up and try again to find places. BTW any SD cards installed? If yes, remove that card.

Wrong date and time

Your GPS receive its date and time from satellites. Take the unit outside and acquire a satellite fix in order to update your time and date. You can set the time zone and time display (12hr, 24hr, UTC) under the unit setting.

Do the following: 1 - Make sure you have fresh batteries in the unit and turn the unit on. 2 - Check the GPS date and Time. On the Main Menu at the bottom of the screen, you can see a date and time. If the date and time are not current, then the clock is your problem. You will have to wait for the almanac information to be updated. Details are below in a later section. 3 - Make sure your GPS is in the Normal Mode and not a demo mode. Verify other systems settings. Go to the main menu and click on Setup icon. From the Setup screen, access the System screen icon. Verify the following settings: GPS: normal WAAS: Enabled Language: English or your choice. Battery: Set according to your battery types. 4 - Check your GPSs Version Software. Go to the main menu and click on Setup icon. From the Setup screen, access the System screen icon. From the System screen, access the sub-menu icon in the upper right bar. Select "Software Version" from the list. Verify the actual software version for me. The latest version available for the eTrex Legend is version 3.90 dated March 2008. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=711 Update the unit using this latest software and using Garmin's Webupdater. http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp If that won't work, use the following download page to access the latest software updates per units. http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp 5 - Resetting your GPS clock and almanac information Next you may need to acclimate your unit to a new date and time (almanac information). If you had your unit off and without batteries for over a month since you last accessed satellites, then your clock and almanac information may be incorrect. Even Garmin acknowledges this problem after software updates and the problem with accessing satellites. They state: "unit data including alamanac information may be incorrect or cleared. Back up all user data before upgrading. After installation is complete, place unit with a clear view of the sky for 15-30 minutes to re-acquire almanac data. " I know of no way to reset the clock using the GPS menus. All I can suggest is that you do the following: A - turn the unit on and wait 5 minutes or so for the "Poor Satellite Reception" screen to appear. See page 7 of the owner's manual. B - Set the "new location" to your area using the map when the "poor satellite reception screen" appears. Be sure to use the "map" option and not the "automatic". C - Set the GPS outside with a clear view of the sky. Check on it every 10 minutes. When the "Poor Satellite Reception" screen appears again, then click on "Restart Search". The "Restart Search" option is used when the date provided in the GPS is not today's date. (See page 7 of the Owner's manual for an example) Legend Owners Manual: http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/eTrexLegend_OwnersManual.pdf D - Once the GPS can track 4 satellites, then the clock should reset and you should be fine. This process could take up to an hour. I have had this problem with my eTrex Vista and eTrex Legend (both backup GPSs) and resolved it by having the clock reset. In fact, I just tried my eTrex Legend today after not using it for many months and storing it without batteries and it had this same problem. I followed the steps above to fix the problem. This took about 35 minutes.
