I can't remove the old toilet seat from a eljer savannah toilet. there's doesn't seem to be any way to grab the nut under the screw -- it is really hard to get to. Since it is in my bathroom, I don't want to use any products that smell. I managed to loosen the bolt, but still have a ways to go. Any ideas? FYI, I bought one of the "easy remove" seats to replace this one with so I'll never have to go through this again.

FYI, I bought one of the "easy remove" seats to replace this one with so I'll never have to go through this again. I have the manual that was suggested before and it in no way helps (it has nothing to do with the seat). I need to figure out how to get the bolt off.

I already have that and it has nothing to do with the toilet seat. the problem is getting at the bolt...

  • galaxyg Mar 18, 2011

I actually decided to try a little WD40 about an hour ago -- I'm sure it will take a little while to seep down. I used a mirror and realized the nut on the underside is round -- no wonder I couldn't get a good grip! I don't see any "cover". The other annoying factor is that I can't grab onto the bolt unless I hold the pliers at an angle -- the shape of the bowl prevents me from getting at it. What is the best way to get a grip on a completelty round bolt? Thanks.

  • galaxyg Mar 18, 2011

Actually, a locking vice grip might do the trick -- I'm amazed that I loosened it as much as I did with just pliers. It is so frustrating -- the screw is very loose at this point, but I just can't loosen it anymore. Vice grips make sense -- I'll let you know if that works. Btw, is it normal for companies to use round bolts?

  • galaxyg Mar 19, 2011

Vise grips did the job -- thank you so much. I don't know why I didn't think of that (probably because I didn't have vice grips handy). It look me about 20 seconds to get the other screw out and now I have the new seat installed. Thanks again.

Yes, ZJLimited was a great help (much more help than the first "expert" who only sent me a link to a .pdf fie that I already had and had nothing to do with the seat). ZJL answered promptly and gave me numerous things to try. I'll look up ZJL if I ever have another question. Thanks again.

On most seats, the bolts are mounted from the top with a nut on the underside of the bowl. There may be a cover that snaps back, covering the top of the bolt.

Applied WD-40 oil for two horus and try again. Other choice, try tapping with a screwdriver from the lower part is up, forcing him to leave a little on every shot, be careful.

Keep us updated.

The only way I can think of is to use a vice grip. Bash a smaller socket on with a hammer then undo, use vice grips, angle grinder if all else fails.

If the bolt head is not recessed you can cut a slot in it and use a flathead screwdriver on it. If there is enough "meat" then you can go with a visegrip or another option would be to use JB Weld and an old allen key wrench. Use the JB Weld to securely attach the old allen key into the rounded out hole and then remove.

About, "is it normal for companies to use round bolts?"

Bot always, personally, I replace it with hexa or others.

You may have to use a really neat tool and that is aunt splitter. You can get it at O Reilly's auto store or any of those stores. That should remove it.

Missing bolt for toilet seat

A standard toilet seat bolt should be fine. There are some with a rubber boot that expands as tightened but you should be able to reach the nut by reaching into the tank and under the lip. The new nut & bolt should be plastic so they won't corrode.

How do you remove the plastic nut covers on an Eljer toilet seat.? Do the plastic covers pry off with a screwdriver or are they twisted off.? Would like to know before I damage anything. The seat is loose...

they pry off but take care to make sure whether they swing toward u or away from u. Just take time and pry easily and it will expose the plastic flathead screw with plastic wing nut on bottom
