The LG is a SATA device so connect it to another SATA connector on the motherboard - you have 3 free ones there. You will also need a power adaptor like

LG dvd external drive not recognized by computer

ERROR 43? Check your SATA connection.
HERE'S HOW I FIXED MINE.
(IE. Computer tries to install driver for BD burner, but ultimately fails, and gives the message. "Unsuccessful" and/or "Microsoft Windows stopped device. Error 43") The SATA CONNECTION on my BD burner's EXTERNAL CASE had gone bad.
TO TEST IT. I used a SATA/IDE to USB Adapter Cable I bought for about $10 on amazon.
  • I unscrewed the external case to get at the internal drive, and plugged the SATA adapter cable directly into the internal BD burner drive (bypassing the case assembly), and plugged the other end into my computer USB port.
    • PS My BD burner POWER was working OK, so I left the big white 4pin power adapter connected to the original external case.

VOILA! Both my laptop and my desktop PC recognized the LG BD burner again and assigned it a drive letter (like it used to do).

  • Now I either need to (1) Buy a NEW EXTERNAL case ($10 - $30), (2) install it as an internal drive (could get problematic if "ANYDVD" is installed) or (3) just leave it connected via the cheap adapter cable.
It's super EASY (& inexpensive) to TEST this before spending $$$$ on a new equipment.
Hope this helps someone. It had me miffed for a while there.

Dell Dimension 8400 running xp has died. Can I put the hard drive into a spare slot in a Windows 7 PC to get the data off the XP HD?

Two Options:1. Yes you can as long as your Windows 7 PC has the correct connection for your hard drive. Most likely you need an IDE connection. If you have an IDE hard drive and the Windows 7 PC has an IDE connection, then you will need to make sure to "slave" the hard drive by moving the jumper on the hard drive to slave mode.
2. If your Windows 7 pc doesn't have an IDE connection, the purchase a USB to IDE cable adapter:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329300&CatId=3770

This way you can plug your hard drive into any computer through USB.

Can not get computer to power back up no lights on front o rear just little light on mother board have dell 8400

Bad Power Supply, sscorbett.

Usually you have enough power to light LED lights, (Like the harddrive activity LED light for add-in cards, that you see on the motherboard), and spin fans, but Not enough power to turn the Processor on.

harddrive activity light for add-in cards (SCSI LED)

The Dimension 8400 comes with an ATX style of Power Supply, that has a maximum rated Wattage of 250 Watts.
1) ALL of the LED lights combined use less than 1 Watt of power.
2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts
3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts.

Your Power Supply just has enough power to light that LED light.
Weak voltage power rail.
Replace the Power Supply.

[ There are three power rails inside that SMPS.
Switched-Mode Power Supply.

1) The 3.3 Volt power rail
2) The 5 Volt power rail
3) The 12 Volt power rail ]

The ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to the size, and shape of the case, for one.
Approximately 6 inches Wide, 5.5 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall.
The ATX power supply case in the Dimension 8400 however, is shorter in length.
It is 4 inches Long. (Depth)

Scroll down to see the connectors of the various power cables needed.

You may have a Power Supply with these dimensions, and needed power cables, in an unused computer.
Perhaps someone has upgraded to a better computer, and has an unused computer that you can temporarily borrow the Power Supply for a test unit.

Make sure it has at least 250 Watts (Maximum rated wattage), plus,

1) 20-pin ATX main power cable. (Or a 20 + 4-pin ATX main power cable)

[ 20 + 4-pin ATX main power cable,

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable

Plus the various power cables needed for the Harddrive, optical drive/s, and computer case fan/s, if it/they do not connect to the motherboard.

LG GH22 is not working

The most common issues are cable related. If the eject button on the front works but the computer doesn't see the drive, check the data cable. Make sure the cable is fully seated at the motherboard and is correctly oriented and connected to the drive. (Check the orientation first; it is easy to get upside down.) Since this is an IDE drive, you may also have to check the jumpers are at cable select.

If the eject button doesn't work, then you don't have power. Try a different power connector.

If you have enough power to eject and see the drive, then check your drivers and software. (A failing power supply or one that just doesn't have enough power for your system under load are also possible issues for write problems.)

I have a dimension 8400, I recently upgraded my graphics card. Followed the instructions, blew out the computer of dust bunnies, inserted the new card, tured on the power, machine went from start screen to...

check the power cable and ide/sata cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard maybe they are just disconnected, if the unit is working properly before you cleaned it, or does the unit detect the hard drive and cd/dvd drive during power on self test, if yes then you do need to re install windows, if you do not have an xp cd then you just have to purchased a genuine copy if you want to troubleshoot it by your self, or just take to it to comp. tech save trouble and lost of your time

DELL Dimension 8400 Dual DVD/CD Drive Problems

Easy.
1. Take off the sides of the PC (screw in back and in slides to the rear
2. Then, each drive is held in by 2-4 screws on the sides in the long slots where the drives are now.
3. Loosen all and slide the drives out, carefully disconnecting Power, IDE and Audio cables as you go) Mark One TOP and the other BOT

2 new 48x DVDRW drives will cost you $60.00 at Micro Center

4. Look at the back of the old drives jumpers (A group of 6 or 8 dual rows of pins between the Power and IDE cable connections) and set the new drives up the same way. This will be either CS or MS/SL configuration. They could both be SLaves, depending on the cabling and configuration.
5. Put the TOP drive in and connect it up. The single stripe on the IDE cable goes on the side next to the power plug. Most IDE cable only have 39 holes with one plugged so you cannot plug it in wrong.. but it never hurts to check.
6. Do the same with the BOT drive.
7. Put the screws in
8. Power up the PC and look at the DVDRW drive lights. They should come on for 5-10 sec and go off. If they stay on, the IDE cable is plugged in 180deg off.(upside down) If they go off, push each eject button to be sure it works, then turn off the power.
9. Put the sides on
10. Done!

Bootup and windows should see the drives and assign them each a driveletter.

Cheers!

Trying to add another internal hard drive to Dell Dimension 3000

Ok... one end of the ide cable goes to the board... make sure that's plugged in correctly and has a blue connector.... second... the last drive on the other end has to be the master... the drive before that is the slave... if that setup is not working ensure that the drivers are set for master and slave... also make the power is pluigged into both drives
