Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
I am assuming this is a front loader as you have not mentioned the make and model ;-0)

Your'e right, simple! This sounds very much like the belt is slipping. Don't be tempted to try tightening the old belt- purchase a replacement!
Belts are not expensive- sorry I do not know how much yours would cost- and are easy to be changed by a competent person:-
REMOVE POWER FROM THE MACHINE AND REMOVE THE BACK.
The motor support bolts should be loosened and the old belt removed. Often putting the new belt on is a bit of a struggle, even with the motor 'loose', because it is new and smaller!
Once on it should be tensioned by pulling the motor against the belt firmly- but not over tight- and the motor support bolts tightened.
ON NO ACCOUNT SHOULD ANY FORM OF LEVERAGE BE USED TO TENSION THE BELT. THAT COULD LEAD TO DAMAGE TO THE BELT, MOTOR AND BEARINGS- EXPENSIVE!
Good luck,
John C

Why does it always become unbalanced in spin cycle?

how confident are you to get inside it? Check the balance springs and shock absorbers.

Normally it is two simple things.

First the machine must be level front to back and left to right. Also all 4 feet must be in equal contact with the floor.

Make sure you load the washer evenly with clothes. Mix large and small items so when the spin starts the clothes even out. Never wash just one large item that is very absorbent, like one bathrobe or one blanket..

Whirlpool Thin Twin model LTE5243DQ2 The washer will pump the water out but it wont spin unless i open the machine and rearrange the load. Then it spins but sounds like it's working very hard to do so

I'm not familiar with your model but on the surface it sounds like the belt is loose. If the load is not really well-balanced, a loose belt can't move the drum and when the load is balanced the motor turns really fast because the belt is slipping. Tightening or replacing the belt is fairly simple with normal tools and there are plenty of pages/videos out there on how to do it. Hope this helps! Good luck!

My Defy Automaid DAW285 only works when you put in a small load of washing

It seems that the "start" winding of the motor is defective or the capacitor is defective

My washer is leval but continues to display ul code when spin cycle starts

UL does not mean the washing machine unit itself is unlevel, it means the load cannot be balance, possibly washing too small a load that the machine cannot distribute in drum evenly ( happens alot when only one or two items being washed), could be poor pump out (check filters if accessible) the machine tries to start spin with excess water or maybe it is a mixed load, lots of small items and maybe one or two large items that hinder the distribution. My machine is very temperamental when I do the sheets, because they get tangled during the wash part of the cycle and then the machine cannot get them balanced to spin. I sometime have to manual move the item about and then put it to the spin only cycle.Hope this helps

The washer shuts down in the middle of the cycle.clothes are full of water. I put it on spin cycle to get rid of the water. It seems to happen with only two or three towels in a load.new motor...

There are a couple of things that can cause this to happen. One is there may be a restriction in the drain pump
.All the hoses and coin trap need to be checked for blockage,The next thing would be a faulty door lock mechanism even though it will run and wash there are certain parts of the cycle it will not operate. The next item to go wrong would be the main control board.
Highly unlikely that it is the belt or the motor.
I Hope this sheds some light on your machine and it gets fixed right.

Happy New Year.

At the end of every possible cycle the cothes are still wet. What is the problem?

The problem is that your washing machine uses water to wash your clothes.  Have you tried washing them with air or maybe rocks?
I hope being a smartass helped!

Burning rubber smell

Even though manufacturers' love to advertise it, I personally would not load "too many items", as it may cause excessive normal ware and tear on your machine parts, motor, belt, etc.

Yes; the smell can be the belt and possibly your motor as well. The motor may be spinning, but the weight may be too much when the belt is engaging to rotate the drum. I would be careful not to burn the motor (About $120 - part only)

You should be able to access and inspect the drive-belt in the rear of the machine by removing an access panel (back of washer).

To replace the belt if fairly simple. Remove and re-install by wedging a long screw driver in between the belt and metal pulley (circular), while simultaneously rotating the pulley.

You may be required to make a belt repair if you start to have problems with your "washer not spinning" or "making a noise/not spinning"
