My Samsung 170s monitor has the top 1/3 getting darker than the rest of the display. I am thinking I have a bad CFL at the top but wonder what it will cost to replace the top CFL and how to do it?

Look on ebay for a replacement one, or gogole the monitor to find out the model of light required, they are pretty standard for most.
once your inside your monitor, your realy just changing a bulb, however you may bneed to strip the thing down to get to the bit you need, swap to for bottom, just to confirm this is the problem before buying one.

IH252 inc monitor bottom half darker than top.

Thin screen LCD monitor brightness controls operate several fluorescent lamps called "backlights" that are positioned behind the LCD display. Typically, they're located around the edges of the screen - sometimes just at the top and bottom, and other times at the left and right edges and others still at all 4 edges.

Fluorescent "backlight" lamp, inverter & connection wiring.

The lamps are miniature versions of those sold in stores. They require a support circuitry called an inverter that convert & boosts the level of DC to AC voltage performing the functions of a ballast in a traditional fluorescent fixture.

The reason a part of your screen remains dark is because one or more of the components in the picture above has failed and will not allow the lamp to shine. Replacement lamps and inverters aren't expensive - but requires patience and the ability to disassemble / assemble the monitor (which is usually harder to do than it appears) and solder. They are available various lengths and color temperatures (you must get a lamp that is identical or it will be noticed). If this is a new monitor - you ought to return it for replacement. If used, consider the cost of purchasing a replacement (new or used) vs. repair.

I hope this helps & good luck!

Philips 170s menu keeps on popping up

Sounds like a bad controller board. Board-level repair on a monitor controller board is quite difficult and bound to fail, for a number of reasons. You can look at the part number on the controller and try to locate a replacement online. Otherwise, the switch for the menu might be bad.

LP3065 top arrea darker - backlight defect?

what you can do is to remove the back cover to access the inverter board. probably the cause of the smell is burned inverter board for the screen back light ( ccfl ) at the upper portion of the display.you can find the inverter board near the power supply board. usually you will replaced the inverter board since most of the part get fried as will as the pcb pattern circuit board get burnt.hope this can help good luck.

Philips 170s LCD Backlight turns on only 1 sec and than the backlight off. The indicator lamps still green.... anyone can help me? thanks

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Lap top ok but cant see anything on screen

2 possible problem, bad LCD or bad CFL. attach an external monitor and start your laptop. if you see a display, you need to bring your laptop to a professional repair center because fixing CFL needs special tool. if you are capable of removing parts of your laptop, you can find LCD assembly on ebay.
