Question about Dell Studio XPS 13 Laptop Computer (Intel Core 2 Duo P8800 500GB4GB) (dypcgp31) PC Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Dell Studio XPS 13 and a few months ago my speakers suddenly stopped working. I lived with it for a while by jut using a headphone jack. However, lately both of my headphone jacks have stopped playing through the right earphone. I was just wondering if it was a hardware problem or a software problem. Thanks in advance for the help. P.S. I have already checked to make sure that both the headphone jacks sensors aren't "stuck" and have already checked audio drivers and my default playback devices.

Thanks genuinegemin. But no luck. I loaded up in Dell Diagnostics and it played through the speakers fine, but still a problem with the right earphones in both headphone jacks. I am going to open my laptop up because it looks like a cable problem. Thanks again!

Check the device manager in the windows control panel and make sure your audio device is listed and has no conflicts present. If all is good there, I suggest downlading the latest driver, then uninstall/remove your audio device from the device manager, then install the new driver and let the computer rediscover the harware. Sometimes it just helps when the computer thinks it's a new device.

Well it seems to me that if the speakers worked fine in the diagnostics test then it would be a software problem within windows. Maybe a resource issue or communication issue between the hardware and the software. The sound is hardwired to the motherboard so if it was bad it wouldnt work in any state. The headphone jacks may need to be cleaned or the ground contact inside the jack maybe needs to be bent back into position. A flashlight and a micro flat head screwdriver can achieve that, but be careful not to pry to hard. I would suspect a cable or wire issue as a near last resort. Hope ya get it workin.

Phone output jack connector, this kind of connector acts as a switch that when you have your earpieces connected the speaker is automatically disconnected, and when you unplug your earpiece then the speaker activates, so there's your issue.

The fault is in the cable: you will have to dismantle the left speaker housing and start cutting from the cable until the break is removed then solder it back to the speaker - use an multimeter to check the continuity of the wires.

Dell D810 speakers do not work, but headphone jack does work

It seems as though you might have a bad plug, There is a set of tabs that tell the laptop whether to use the speakers or the headphones. This switch may of locked into the headphones position. This is probably a case of where you would need to replace or repair the headphones port. check to make sure there is nothing in the port to block it. You can also try applying some light oil on the end of a headphones jack and placing it in and out several times to break free a possible stuck part. It also may be a case that the solder mark on the board has disconnected itself from the headphones jack and needs reseating. This would be a difficult fix but not at all impossible.

Dell studio xps no sound will come out of the speakers

I assume you mean the internal speakers.

First thing I would try is hooking up a set of headphones. If you can hear sounds thru the headphones then there could be an issue with the headphone jack. (the jack acts like a switch, switching OFF the speakers when you have a plug inside, and switching them back ON when you remove the plug).

If you dont hear sounds thru the headset or speakers, check your device manager, and remove/reinstall your audio driver. You can download the driver at the dell website Support.Dell.com.

I have a 4 month old Dell Studio 1535 laptop, with audio problems

Hi,
Firstly check that the microphone level is down or turned off as this sounds like some sort of feedback that's being produced.

Check the microphone and try to play music again.

Please post back

Good luck.

Dell studio 1737 speakers crackle and pop.

My best guess is, if they crackle with the speakers but not the headfones,  then replace the speakers. Must be a lose wire or something of that nature.
