Question about Western Digital (WD5000AAKS) 500 GB SATA Hard Drive

2 HD's installed in Dell Studio XPS 8100. Keep getting error message that one of the drives has failed but when I do a scan with dell support center it shows everything OK. Dell customer support said the drives weren't spining in sync. I am concerend the drive is really going to fail soon. Suggestions?

Have you configured the two disk-drives to "mirror" each other, i.e., write every block of data to both disk-drives? If so, then one of the two disk-drives has "failed" -- it is not recording the data,
and all your data is _only_ available from the _one_ disk-drive. So, you need to identify which of the two disk-drives has failed, and you need to buy a replacement disk-drive. Then, use the "mirroring" software to copy everything from the "good" disk-drive to the "new" disk-drive, to re-establish the "mirroring". Do this before your _second_ disk-drive _also_ fails!

You will need to replace the hard drive, an error 0146 is a failed hard drive or bad drive sector.

Error code 2000-0142


Drive Self Test failed. Status byte = XXh.
Start by following the directions on this site;

If a scan for errors doesn't work then your HDD may have failed.

Error code 0147 spindle test failed


The error you received (2000:0147) indicates the drive has failed. It cannot be fixed. You need to replace the drive.

Is it possible to take my IDE harddrive from my old dell dimension 8100 running 'XP' and install it as a second harddrive in my dell studio 8100 studio xps with W7, then boot "XP" from harddrive...


If your motherboard in your new machine supports IDE and you set the jumper on the HDD to slave then I dont see any reason why you wouldnt be able to use it as a second drive
