First thing you'll need to do is switch the presser foot.

Your machine should have come with a specific button hole foot.

(might have an R on the bottom)

To snap off:

Raise the needle and presser foot.

Press the red button on the back of the foot holder
and the foot will drop.

To snap on:

Place the presser foot so the pin on the foot lies just

under the groove of the foot holder.
Lower the foot holder to lock the foot in place.

Select which buttonhole style you would like to stitch.
This can be done by selecting a mode (buttonholes are 06-08)
and then adjusting to the desired length and width.

After you do this, lower the presser foot and hold the foot pedal down.
The machine will automatically sew the buttonhole and stop when it is finished

All you'll need to do is just cut the thread after.

Hope you found this information helpful.

Is it necessary to use the buttonhole attachment or should I be able to use the stitch selection buttonhole function? I have a Singer Advance 7422 model & our Singer store closed no help here.

You don't have to use the buttonhole attachment. Many older machines never had the buttonhole attachment but still made buttonholes. There are manual ways to sew buttonholes on a sewing machine with only a straight stitch and zig-zag stitch.

Instructions for making a buttonhole

The method will depend on your make & model machine, although the vintage sewing machine buttonhole method will work on all zig-zag machines (just requires manually measuring and adjusting the stitch length & width during the process):

Be sure there is a stabilizer between the fabric where the buttonhole is located so the fabric will not stretch or tear.

Can I sew buttonholes on a 5525?

If your machine has a straight-stitch and zig-zag function, you can always sew buttonholes. It would be helpful if your machine has the ability to set the needle left-center-right, but a buttonhole can still be done even without this function. Whether or not your machine has a programmed buttonhole function will be included in the owner's manual.

How do you do button holes

Firstly look in manual. Secondly, search online for manual. Thirdly, I seem to remember that you had to select the buttonhole function on the machine. If you haven't got one then you need to sew two parallel lines of stitching very close together, then overstitch at each before finally cutting between the parallel stitches.

Singer 7258 will not sew automatic buttonholes. The needle goes up and down, but that's all. The buttonhole lever is down, so that's not it. Please help.

if the sewing machine is set on the buttonhole setting then it's
possible that the sewing machine motherboard has a problem.
or a part could be damaged, the machine may need some type
of adjustment.

My automatic buttonhole stitch is not working on my elna sewing machine ,even when the lever is pulled down

you should a buttonhole button that must be pushed on the machine
either before you pull the buttonhole lever down or after to let the
sewing machine know what function to use, my sewing machine
won't let me make a buttonhole unless I push the buttonhole button
or yes, like you said the buttonhole foot could be damaged.
