As I followed the exact instructions given me, which I fully carried it through, it was just obvious that it was not going to work, as I did it several times, making doubly sure I was doing what was to be done.

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

No, the Playstation3 was bought here in GB, but I have purchased a few Blue-ray DVDs from the States which untill I can get some way past that, I cannot watch them. I did not know whether you could do this or not. I do know that you can make ordinary DVD players play both Region 1,

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

No help here, as he thought my Playstation 3 may have been purchased in the States.

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

Once again I have been informed that Region 1 Blue-ray Disc's will only play on a Player from that region, & it is the same for Pal disc;s only able to play on player from the Uk.
I can only hope this is not so. I would like to give it another try from somebody else please

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

I am being told that, a Blu-ray disc is made for a Region that is only meant for that particular region only, unless a Region Free disc is purchased. If I find this is correct, then I am on to a loser. How can I be sure this is the case. I still need to be totally convinced.

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

I have just had another reply, that again seems to say that it isnt possible to get a way to play my Region 1 blu-ray disc's to play on my Region 2 player. I am still going for a few more tries before giving up.

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

I know all about dvd Shrink, it does not work on Blu-ray Disc's. Thanks anyway

  • wlgosnell89 Mar 18, 2011

I now accept I am not going to be able to use my Region 1 Blu-rays on my UK Sony Playstation3 Player

Hi there, unfortunately making a PS3 play different region blu-ray's and DVD's to where the PS3 was bought is actually impossible at the moment. No one has ever managed to hack the region lock on any PS3 apart from the PS3 jailbreak dongle that was released a few months ago. Now Sony has patched the PS3 with an update and even that does not work now. It took them 4 years to crack the PS3, its not likely it will happen again any time soon.

The only possible way you would be able to play those discs would be to buy a motherboard and blu ray logic board from a stripped american PS3 and swap them into your PS3. A bit pointless as you will then not be able to play UK DVD's so you may as well just go and buy a complete american PS3. Sony are not the only ones making it difficult to play blu-ray's from a different region, a lot of manufacturers of stand alone blu-ray players make it very difficult to make them region free too.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make your PS3 region free or unlocked from its current region. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

You can't change the region code on the PS3 to play movies from a different region. My friend told me about a guy he knows though that used a program called DVDShrink to make his dvds region free then he played them no problem ;)

there is no "easy" way around it, some people have "tricked" the ps3 into playing them by pressing R1 and X and often after you start the disc from the menu. Your other option is to install homebrew on your PS3 but that's a whole other can of worms.

The basic problem with Blu-ray discs is the same issue with the DVD's. The studio's, because of licensing deals with different countries, does want you to be able to buy discs in one country, and then play them in another country. With that being said, there is a website specifically dedicated to listing blu-ray discs bought from USA that are capable of being played on PS3's from the UK. Here is the link:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-movies-tv-programmes/495802-what-foreign-blu-ray-movies-work-uk-ps3-list-here.html

There is a lot of good information on the site about a lot of the things that are being sold on the web today that claim to make any USA blu-ray playable on any countries PS3. Unfortunately most of those items are nothing more than a ripoff. The truth so far is that no one has been able to come up with a permanent fix that would make a PS3 totally region-free, or in other words, make it so that any PS3 could play any blu-ray disc.

One of the biggest problems is that Sony themselves own movie studios. Any time a hack has been found for the PS3 Sony turns around and updates their firmware to defeat the hack. Part of the problem as well is that blu-ray discs coded as PAL discs will only play on PAL players, and of course the same thing can be said about NTSC discs.

The only other resolution you might want to think about is this; if you are planning on buying a lot of NTSC (North American video standard) blu-ray discs, and you want to play them in the UK there are a number of web sites that will sell you a blu-ray player has been "chipped" (an actual hardware fix has been done to the player) that will allow you to play any countries blu-ray or DVD discs. They are not much more expensive than the standard players. These are actual units manufactured by Sony, Panasonic, Proton, etc. The company then takes out the basic operating chip out of the player and replaces it with their own basic operating chip. If you do a Google search on Google UK for region free blu-ray player you will get quite a few hits that you can then follow up on.

Good luck with the discs and I hope the ones you have from USA will work on your PS3.

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. The reason why you can't watch the bluray movies on your Ps3 is because PS3s are Region Coded. PS3 Game Disks are region free, though so they can be played wolrdwide. But Blu-ray movie disks, DVDs, PS2 games, and PS1 games are all region coded, and thus will only play on PS3s from the same region.

According to the latest Blu-ray stats webpage, 66.52% of Blu-rays are Region Free. Use the following site to find out what releases are region free or not:
Blu-Ray Region Code Info

Note: Dvds are kept in their original region on Blu-ray disc players and so are Blu-ray discs for their regions. So if you bought a PS3 in the Pal area of Region 2 then the Pal dvds will work. If you have an American PS3 or at least bought a PS3 in an area that doesn't support Pal then no it won't play.

Hope this info help you understand why some Blu-Ray can't be play on Ps3 unless they are Region Free.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

It doesnt mean that if the ps3 is english you can play any blu-ray english movie on it. Check the link if the blu-ray that you have is a region free if not unfortunately you wont be able to play it. The settings is embeded to the unit same as with the cd. Thanks

Hi wlgosnell89,

Just another thought on this concern,

Did you buy the PS3 in the same country as the disc? The Playstation 3 has a built in Blu ray drive that indeed make a fine DVD player. Your disc should work, unless you have a region issue. Please be informed that if your system is a region 1 machine it will not play a region 2 disc.

You might familiar with this process, please give it a try.

1. Insert the disc in your PS3.

2. Scroll down to [video] section on the [XMB].

3. Now click on the blu ray icon using the x button.

-- if you're still has the same issue. Please try to use a different disc with the same region as the system and this should give you an answer.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

What you usually do in order to play a Blu Ray Disc is to insert it into the PS3, scroll to the "Video" Section on the XMB, and click on the Blu Ray disc icon.

You'll need to change your region settings.. This can only usually be done 5 times though so don't make a habit of it. If your only using Aus dvds then it won't be an issue.

More than likely, if you have error code 80010514, you have a bad blue ray laser, but just the blue ray portion of it. It will need to be replaced. Good luck!

Sony palystation 3 80g only plays DVDs and sony playstation 2 gam

You need to replace the blu-ray laser. It's a VERY common problem. It's due to a factory defect with the laser.

Most 80GB models use laser model KES-400A or KES-400AAA.

You can either contact Sony for repair 1-800-345-SONY.

They charge $150 or you can go the DIY route for under $100.

PS3 80g only plays DVDs and PS2 games .... help

The reason why DVDS still work and the blu-rays don't is because it's a three part laser. dvd / cd / blu-ray.

The blu-ray portion almost always goes out first.
