Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

Is it true that if you preheat an xbox 360 mobo to about 190 degrees celsius you can undo the damage cause by warping? If this is true, how does it work?

lololol. I didn't ask about modding consoles though, and wouldn't it be counterproductive if advice on how to repair a console is a TOS violation? Either way, thats fine. You did your best. I have a scrap board at home i can use; see how much abuse it can take.

Oh, and for future reference; it doesn't melt the connection back together. You'd be lucky to reach 100 degrees celsius with the console by overheating, and 190 isn't enough to melt the solder. You need to reach 217 degrees for the solder to reach liquidus.

Hi edchen111,

This is only a temporary fix and really unstable with mixed results.Ssince sometimes the damage is caused by some connections shorting out and end up damaged, by heating it, it melts the connnection back together but it could also shor circuit other components, or the heat itself could damage the system.

The best way to go around this issue is by contacting tech support and getting it fixed by them or just replacing the system.

Hope this helped,

Thanks, but i knew that already. I have a 0020 error, which is caused by a warped mainboard. What i meant was that i'm taking the mainboard out and bolting it TIGHTLY to a modified griddle (this achieves the same effect as using a $800 IR preheat station.).Then i'm heating the board to 190 degrees celsius, which is not hot enough for the solder to reach liquid state, or really even hot enough to damage anything on the underside of the board, for that matter. Hopefully, since heat and stress(caused by raised standoffs) inside the casing caused the warping to happen, i'm hoping that applying the same principle in reverse should "unwarp" it. I'm doing a proper reflow afterwards. either way, if i don't preheat the board before the reflow, i'm gonna end up warping it like a potato chip and causing thermal shock should my idea work, even just in theory? Please don't give me that "call microsoft" ****; I make my money fixing and modding these things.

    Hi edchen111,

I must admit i'm not qualified to handle this issue and giving support on manually repairing or modding consoles goes agaisnt our Terms of Use.

    I Apologize for the inconvinience,

I need help because every time i put in skate 2 in the place where it says start it just goes and says your disc is unreadable

Hi there buddy! This also happens in one of my XBOX 360 games. First thing to check is you need to try other CD of XBOX games. If this works fine, then good! You console is still okay. It is time to check now your Skate 2 CD. Check for any physical damage on the disc, like scratch, crack or even warping. If any of these were found, it is time to buy for a replacement on the game.

When i turn my xbox 360 on it comes up with the error message e74

This Problem has been clearly defined as a G.P.U
and some times but rarely a C.P.U issue of overheating
and warping the P.C. board till connections start breaking
open, There are many fixes for this problem but most
don't address the problem just the symptoms and these
fixes don't usually last very long, and my damage your unit.

The Repair (not a quick fix) is to have the G.P.U. re-flowed
to the main board after straighting (made true and flat)
Then the heat sink must be load onto the chips with
out warping the board . That what I do , and that fixes
99.9% of problem Permanently.

if you have any questions fell free to email me

Xbox 360 red ring of death fixes

All D.I.Y .R.R.o.D fixes try to use the G.P.U overheating
to re-solder itself back to the board . IT DOESN'T .
The solder will slightly soften then you compress
the chip to the board with screws , and this will get your
unit working it will also warp your P.C. board and may/or may not last.
It is at risk of failing again prematurely.

The True Fix is to have the G.P.U. re-flowed that will
fix it completely.

This is a common fault with the 360, it sounds as if your 360 has overheated at some point and caused some damage to the solder pads. what happens is when the console overheats the mainboard warps and breaks the solder joint causing such problems as this.
and with it freezing its more than likely a memory issue. if you are ok with doing the fix yourself i would strip the console down and get a heatgun and put it onto setting no2. then go over the memory chips in a circular motion for about 10 minutes, all the time keeping the heatgun 2-3 inches away to stop it from damaging the board. this should fix this problem. if you still need help we can be contacted at

360 wont turn on

Hi there, This issue may be caused by your power supply and or console not getting good enough ventilation or air vents clogged with dust causing over heating. Check power supply and keep in wide open area same with console (not sitting on carpet). If over heating is the issue you may have warped your motherboard, what happens is the Graphics processing unit (GPU) and or Central processing unit (CPU) get extremely hot causing the mobo to warp and the solder becomes loose and break. Even the fan may be the culprit, the fan uses a lot of power and produces a fair amount of heat that can cause the system to over heat. Please contact microsoft and get system repair if problem persist.

3 red lights of death upon startup

well if your system is under the three year warrenty your best and cheapest bet is to call and have it repaired.
Things to check would be making sure your psu has an ember light and is getting good ventilation check the p.o.s.t by holding down the sync and power button at startup. but i usally find that replacing the mobo is the fastest way to solve this problem. If the GPU gets very hot it causes the mobo to flex causing the lead free solder to become loose and break.

If you move the console while the disk inside is running it will scratch the disk(it just happened to me) I used automotive cleaner wax and polished it from inside to out and then outside to in(not in circles) and it started working again, try it:)
